Obama expected to hit the campaign trail for Democrats with help from Pelosi and Schumer
Source: CNBC
Former President Barack Obama has been laying low when it comes to taking on President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.
Thats not going to last much longer.
The most high-profile member of the Democratic Party is expected to hit the campaign trail for House, Senate and gubernatorial candidates running in the midterm elections while getting guidance from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-CA, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-NY, according to three sources with direct knowledge of the matter.
The timeline is fluid but the former president is expected to start making an impact in September, according to two sources familiar with his team's plan.

(6,881 posts)A pivotal race.
NBC News/Marist: Scott 45, Nelson 49
Is that accurate?

(4,429 posts)I lived in Central and North FL for close to 17 years. They will vote for Scott.
Nelson is in trouble. He'll be outspent by a lot (Scott used his own money to buy the Gov.) and Nelson has no charisma. In fact, in all of the years I voted for him......I never really saw him (or heard about him) doing anything. I'm sure he did - I voted for him every year.
But as someone who is liberal and votes straight party ticket (and lived in a neighborhood in Tally that has one of the - and sometimes THE - highest voter turnout% in FL - very liberal).......he was sort of an afterthought. Again, it's just my impression (and I was a supporter. If I still lived there, I'd vote for him again).
We need to keep that seat - and Scott (I think) can take this race. I think Nelson is in a LOT of trouble.

(6,881 posts)so I was surprised at these polls. Nelson has always been pretty lackluster but very dependable Dem and been around for a long time. Assumed there is a high proportion of elderly retirees who may be concerned by SS and Medicare which is seriously threatened. With threat of full Repub control they can't afford an ideological or personality cult vote.

(43,226 posts)He is out front of the news cycle on all issues, he hits themes that people resonate with, he motivates them, people never forget seeing him, they tell others. Don't forget, his campaigning beat HRC and John McCain in 2008, and Mitts in 2012. As much respect as I have for his term in office, he was best on the campaign trail, even when he went on the stump while in office.

(8,200 posts)Are the doing a credible job or not? Is there a need for a new direction and new younger leaders?

(30,749 posts)They are needed for committee positions and they know their way around Washington. They have been speaking out and providing leadership. Let the young leadership come up through the ranks and learn as they go.
Pelosi has kept her coalition together. She is chosen by her peers, remember. And just exactly what do you mean by a new direction? We have little power in Washington right now, and our leadership is doing everything they can.

(8,200 posts)Evidently the recent defeat of a ten year congressman by a new comer is something think about. I didn't attack either person, just a simple question. How are we going attract the younger people? That is what I have been working on with my congressman from my former state. Why the former and not present, because my connections are with these people I have known for years. I presently live in a super red district, but I will be helping out if I can.

(30,749 posts)I have no problem with this defeat in New York. Just don't make it something it is not. The demographic change there counts for a lot. The people in her district have spoken.
We are attracting younger people. Look at David Hogg and the leadership he and his group is providing. Give him time. He and Emma just may end up in politics. But he will not start out at the top. He has had good mentorship up to this point in his life, too. He learned from teachers and parents.
I live in a red district. I am already helping out.

(8,200 posts)We know, even by her own admission, that Clinton neglected to campaign more in areas heavily hit by the loss of manufacturing jobs. This allowed a demagogue to exploit the issue with ludicrous unchallenged promises that he could easily rectify the situation.
We know that outsourcing is not the major reason for the loss of jobs, but automation which account for 85% of loss jobs. The Industrial Revolution is over and not coming back. We need leaders who grasp the problem and have the tools to actually provide solutions to met the demands that the information age will require.
In our district we have been seeking financing to support younger people who have a better understanding and far more at stake in this new age to met the challenge. This is a real problem since how can a younger person with the need to make a basic living succeed in politics. Isn't it a fact that many in office are independently wealthy? This is what I mean by new and younger blood. I am certainly not discounting the value of the experience and knowledge of the system and its unique challenges. Politics can, unfortunately, be a very dirty business at times especially dangerous in times such as now when a vicious demagogue is in control and a major source of the new media is controlled by ideologues. This period in many ways mirror the era of the situation in the 1930's not identical by analogous ones.

(30,749 posts)but I am nearby and have known this three-term Congresswoman for a long time. She runs a program called Build the Bench.

This is not a one-time deal. She has held several of these events and continues to help recruit and train prospective leaders.
Cheri was mentored by Dick Durbin and she is dedicated and wonderful
None of us like all the money in politics. In Illinois, both candidates for governor are billionaires. I have not had to give one red cent to Pritzker for campaign expenses, signs, buttons, etc. He is completely self-financed. I have been able to spend a bit more on other candidates, but that is not the point.
We had several good candidates for governor in the primary. My husband liked someone who was not a billionaire and voted for him. It is a shame that he had so little chance in today's political world.

(89,254 posts)In that district. Same happened in the district that charlie rangel use to hold. Rangel ended up not running but the winner was hispanic and he beat the guy rangel supported .
As for congress as a whole the bigger problem is the system itself and gerrymandering.
