Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) co-sponsored legislation to protect special counsel Robert Mueller, and he believes that if it went to the Senate floor, it would get enough votes to pass.
He told Chris Wallace this morning, Its necessary because President Trump himself keeps tweeting or saying things that suggest he hasnt fully given up the idea of possibly firing Robert Mueller
Hes issued a whole series of tweets saying this is a witch hunt, that its an attack on him and on democracy, it shouldnt be allowed to go on.
He said a bill protecting the special counsel is a modest and reasonable step, though as Chris Wallace pointed out, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said he does not plan to bring this to the floor. However, Coons said, If it were put on the floor this coming week, I think wed get 60 votes for it. And he even directly appealed to President Trump while on Fox News Sunday:
Ill say to the President if youre watching, Mr. President, saying that you would sign this bill is the single boldest thing you could do to shut up the critics who say there is a risk you might fire Robert Mueller.

(37,648 posts)Can't they pass something without Trump's approval? I guess not. If he vetoes it, they can override the veto, if they have the votes.
Trump will never sign it, IMO.

(21,722 posts)It passed out of the committee, but the Senate won't vote on it. And even if it passed out of the Senate, doubt it would pass the House.

The majority leader shouldnt have a single vote ability to kill a bill. Basically that is what McConnell has by refusing to allow something to come to the floor. So if 99 senators want to vote yes and only McConnell no, he can override the other 99 by not allowing the vote? That is nuts!!!
