South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha sat down with CNN Internationals Christiane Amanpour and expressed how she is pleasantly surprised at the progress thats been made since Trump and North Korean dictator Kim Jong Uns war of words months ago, which many thought would escalate to a nuclear conflict and predicted a very successful summit was going to take place between her country and North Korea.
How do you account for it? Amanpour asked.
One, I thinkclearly, credit goes to President Trump, the foreign minister responded. Hes been determined to come to grips with this from day one. My president also since day one, and I think presidents Moon and Trump have worked very closely together, sometimes in complementarity, sometimes in different messaging, but the level of consultations and the confidence between the two leaders has been instrumental in bringing us to this point.
She pointed to the pressure and increased sanctions on North Korea from the international community as keys that helped change North Koreas behavior. And when asked what would be considered success coming out of the summit, she responded by saying. If we can get put in writing the North Korean leaders commitment to denuclearization, that would be a very solid outcome.

(11,841 posts)But if they did, and follow through with everything, then trump WOULD get credit like it or not. Presidents get blame or credit for major events and the followthrough.
Right now, I just see this as another attempt by the North to get more food & money again. Just like the last dozen "promises"

(51,083 posts)destabilized the mountain on top of the nuclear testing ground? And the fact that if NK does any more tests the mountain will collapse onto their nuclear production facility? And when it collapses it will kill everyone in North and South Korea and lots of Chinese people as well? That's not what made NK stop their nuclear program?
Instead it was the republican president tweeting schoolyard insults?
Well. That's weird.

(5,541 posts)US Presidents always get credit for things that happen during their administration, whether they actually helped make it happen or not.
On the otherhand, if things go sour, Trump will be held responsible as well. Thats the double-edged sword of how it goes.

(3,286 posts)I'm fine with Trump getting credit for it. I won't say it doesn't taste bitter, because it does. But it would be the height of perversity to hope against peace just because we want Trump to fail. I'd rather that peace on the Korean Peninsula becomes a reality, even if it means a feather in Trump's cap. The lives and safety of millions are far more important than how I feel about Trump.

President Trump is struggling at home, which may help explain why he was so excited to hear that a certain special someone was saying nice things about him last week. In a televised address, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Trump's handling of the American economy and said of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, "This is all dreamed up by people who are in the opposition to Trump so as to make sure that everyone thinks that what he's doing and working at is illegitimate."
After some time spent drawing hearts all over his latest copy of Kremlin Beat magazine, Trump decided to pick up the phone and call. Asked later about their conversation, Trump said, "It was great. He said very nice things about what I've done for this country in terms of the economy."
Any other person might have asked, "I wonder if Putin has any ulterior motives for complimenting me?" But not Trump, and this was hardly the first time he had basked in the glow of a compliment from Putin. Through much of the 2016 campaign, when Trump was asked why he was so reluctant to criticize Putin's authoritarian rule, he would respond that he couldn't possibly, because Putin had complimented him. "They want me to disavow Putin," he said at one rally, but he couldn't because "he said Trump is a genius." Or another time: "He called me brilliant. He said very nice things about me." Or another time: "Putin says Trump is brilliant, I love that when he says I'm brilliant."
As it happens, Putin's words were mistranslated; the term he used was closer to "colorful" than "brilliant." But the Russian leader learned a lesson: Give Trump a compliment, and he'll do pretty much whatever you want.
