Amid Trumps diplomatic thaw, Otto Warmbiers parents sue North Korea for having brutally tortured and murdered their son

The family of Otto Warmbier filed an extraordinary lawsuit against North Korea in federal court Thursday alleging that the 22-year-old college student was brutally tortured and murdered by Kim Jong Uns criminal regime during 17 months in captivity.
The 22-page complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, details in blunt language how the University of Virginia student, a former homecoming king and soccer standout from Cincinnati, was brutally abused after being detained on a tour in Pyongyang. He arrived home in a coma after being released last June, dying days later.
The action aims to hold Kims regime legally accountable for their sons death, but the timing also raises significant geopolitical implications, coming weeks before an expected meeting between President Trump and the North Korean leader in late May or early June. It also comes a day before a high-stakes inter-Korea summit between Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, which is widely viewed as a crucial prelude to the potential denuclearization talks between Trump and Kim.
Trump has raised Warmbiers death repeatedly in public statements and made his case a cornerstone of his administrations maximum pressure campaign on Pyongyang, which the president has credited for bringing Kim to the negotiating table. Trump has pledged to raise human rights in his talks with Kim, but some South Korean officials fear that doing so publicly could complicate the sensitive diplomatic efforts underway.

(2,795 posts)But like anyone in Trump's orbit, you're only important when it serves some self serving purpose for him. After that, well you're nothing more than just a thing out there in the land of nameless faceless ingrates.
I want the day to come where they toss that orange blob into prison. I really, really want it to happen.

According to his medical team, brain scans revealed Warmbier had suffered extensive loss of brain tissue throughout his brain, consistent with a cardiopulmonary event that caused the brain to be deprived of oxygen. Doctors said they did not know what caused the cardiac arrest, but that it could have been triggered by a respiratory arrest, while a neurointensive care specialist at the hospital stated that there was no evidence indicating botulism. They said physicians found no evidence of physical abuse or torture; scans of Warmbier's neck and head were normal outside of the brain injury.
At the request of Warmbier's family, an autopsy was not performed, and only a postmortem external examination was conducted. Doctors speculated that the cause of death could have been a blood clot, pneumonia, sepsis or kidney failure. Sleeping pills could have caused Warmbier to stop breathing if he had botulism and was paralyzed from it. The University of Cincinnati doctors found no evidence of botulism, but several neurologists said that botulism cannot be ruled out, given the length of time before Warmbier's return to the U.S.
Personally, I wish them luck...I don't see it going very far, but if they get the right judge you never know.
