Women say they faced racial, gender discrimination at central Pa. golf course
Source: York Daily Record
Five African-American women say the ownership and staff at Grandview Golf Club in Dover Township discriminated against them based on their color and gender during an incident at the course on Saturday.
The women Sandra Thompson, 50; Myneca Ojo, 56; sisters Sandra Harrison, 59, and Carolyn Dow, 56, and Karen Crosby, 58 were at first told they were not keeping the pace of play by former York County Commissioner Steve Chronister, who they said told them he was the club's owner.
Later, the women were told they had taken too long of a break between the first and second halves of the course. They were then asked to leave, offered their membership money refunded, and the police were called.

(33 posts)Having grown up in wonderful York, PA.
I know exactly what these privileged a$$holes were thinking...
Those folks in front of us are...a) Women, b)Black. c)I'm someone important, and related to the owner....
Therefore, we can do what we want! If they don't conform, we can make a stink, and we're in the "right"!
York Co. was the "Klan Capitol" of PA. when I left there, so that should tell you something!
I bailed out of that bigoted, small minded, backwater, in 1984... and never looked back!!
I hope these ladies nail those stupid bigots to a barn wall!!! They all deserve it!
Dumb ass, small minded, bigoted, morons!

This implies they are members and after (worst case scenario, believing the golf club) one incident they are being asked to leave the club MEMBERSHIP!
WOW
Can someone confirm if it was a membership vs green fees, as in this is a private club not a municipal course?
from link
Let me ASSURE you this is UNHEARD of to want to throw them out of the CLUB, not off the course for that round but out of the club.
Racism and misogyny 101, I have heard enough.

(3,539 posts)Please dont jump on me, but were they playing as a 5-some? Because that really isnt kosher on a golf course: 4 teeing off is the max.
That being said, from what I read they were keeping up with the group ahead of them, and thats really all you can do.

(4,835 posts)As the last member to arrive, and realizing that a fifth member might pose a problem typically, golf groups are four at most Thompson asked a clerk if it was OK that she join the other four. No problem, she was told.
Around 11, the group teed off. At the second hole, Ojo and Crosby said that Steve Chronister spoke with them.

(6 posts)Steve Chronister is a former County Commissioner who refused to give up his real estate job while working as a commissioner. He collected a large salary while skipping meetings. Can you guess what part he belongs to?

A Pennsylvania golf club has released two statements following an incident Saturday that resulted in the police being called in connection with a group of African American club members, all of them women, who were accused of taking too long while playing and refusing requests to leave the course.
The first statement from Grandview Golf Club was issued Sunday. It expressed regret over the situation, stating, "Our team is very sorry for any interaction that may have made any member feel uncomfortable."
The second statement came a day later and seems to have a different tone. There is no apology or mention of regret. Instead, it states: "In the past players who have not followed the rules, specifically pace of play, have voluntarily left at our request as our scorecard states. In this instance, the members refused to leave so we called police to ensure an amicable result."
Carolyn Dow, one of the five women in the group, told the York Daily Record on Tuesday, "I don't know why they changed their story."
