New ad accuses Paul of siding with terrorists

A dark-money group is airing commercials in Kentucky to pressure him on CIA nominee Gina Haspel.

Rand Paul's opposition to Gina Haspel’s nomination to run the CIA has spurred his opponents to action, with a television ad campaign popping up Tuesday accusing him of representing the interests of terrorists — not Kentucky residents.
The ad by a dark-money group casts Paul’s opposition to Haspel’s nomination as a concession to the terrorists behind the Sept. 11 attacks, reviving some of the most incendiary debates of the early aughts.
“Haspel did exactly what her country asked of her and what was necessary to keep us safe,” a narrator says at the close of the 30-second spot. “Call Rand Paul, remind him he’s in Washington to represent us, not him,” the ad concludes, as an image of Abu Zubaydah, one of Osama bin Laden’s top lieutenants, flashes on the screen.
As a CIA officer, Haspel was involved in some of the agency’s harshest interrogations of captured al Qaeda operatives and in the destruction of some of the tapes of Zubaydah’s interrogations — though not, as Paul has alleged, in the interrogation of Zubaydah himself. (The CIA subsequently cleared her of any wrongdoing.)
