Trump blamed as U.S. colleges lure fewer foreign students

U.S. colleges blame the administrations immigration policies as they fall behind foreign competitors in vying for international students.

American universities are losing out to colleges in other countries in the race to enroll international students, and theyre blaming President Donald Trump.
Foreign competitors are taking advantage of Trumps anti-immigration rhetoric, aggressively recruiting the types of foreign students and faculty who would have typically come to the United States for their higher education. The data already show that U.S. colleges are falling behind foreign competitors during the Trump era.
New foreign student enrollment in the U.S. dropped by 3 percent during the 2016-17 school year, and that decline is projected to double this school year, data show. At the same time, universities overseas are seeing increases as high as the double digits. The decline in foreign students enrolling in American colleges is just the latest evidence of Trump's immigration policies shutting doors in America. The U.S. is also granting fewer visitor visas to people from around the world.
Trump is responsible for the decline in student enrollment, U.S. universities argue especially his travel ban, which goes before the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Dozens of higher education groups wrote in an amicus brief for that case that Trump's travel ban is a "clarion message of exclusion to millions" that harms universities' ability to enroll international students and recruit top faculty.

Nice! (sarcasm...

(22,205 posts)entrance into college has been somewhat of a challenge over last several years, due to huge inflow of students (baby boomers' kids probably) and students to be let in has been cherry-picked. Standards had been tightened, and thus probably should be relaxed. I think all should be allowed, for if they wish to improve themselves, why not? Barriers should not be erected, but instead, relaxed.
Education is the pathway to success, or at least, it gives students perhaps a broader view of the world.

It's not the same as the level of learning at top institutions, nor should it be. It accommodates people who wish to improve themselves without the danger of them falling hopelessly behind students who have the quickest, strongest minds.

(4,269 posts)For the base that is. Fewer potential immigrants, more spots for Americans (so they think).
And great news for those in his base and the gopers who think higher education is bad.

(45,644 posts)I've heard about this a lot from foreign students whose relatives wanted to come here but it's not worth the risk because of dipshit's visa restrictions.
It's takes a lot of time, effort, and money. And that would all be lost if the visa doesn't come through. People have to sort out housing and pay tuition and book plane tickets to move here before knowing if they'll have a visa.

(1,336 posts)Applications from foreign students were never higher than last fall, and news reports suggest that there is a significant "brain drain" of researchers coming north, or coming back home.

(15,567 posts)I was in faculty hiring and we had some amazing foreign nationals doing important research in many areas. I was often impressed by their resumes and what they had done and accomplished in their lives. We had a considerable amount of Canadians too!

(58,785 posts)Far bigger, allied fascism-leaning elements, wealthy and religious, will continue their attempts to take over with him gone, and even accelerate if we don't put a stop to them. I believe we probably are in this election, but it's far from guaranteed. Whether fascist, libertarian, or religious extremists, all have clearly decided limiting education for most furthers their goals.
But the notion that this has ANYTHING really to do with Trump, except as he is a broken tool they're using as best possible, is a very dangerous one. Just imagine the Allied forces cluelessly shooting in the air and at each other while seemingly invisible fascist Axis nations finished conquering Europe.
Republican-controlled legislatures and courts across our nation and mass disinformation are their biggest political tools.
