Facebook moves 1.5bn users out of reach of new European privacy law
Source: The Guardian
Facebook has moved more than 1.5 billion users out of reach of European privacy law, despite a promise from Mark Zuckerberg to apply the spirit of the legislation globally.
In a tweak to its terms and conditions, Facebook is shifting the responsibility for all users outside the US, Canada and the EU from its international HQ in Ireland to its main offices in California. It means that those users will now be on a site governed by US law rather than Irish law.

Facebook also said the change did not carry tax implications. That means users will exist in a state of legal superposition: for tax purposes, Facebook will continue to book their revenue through Facebooks Irish office, but for privacy protections, they will deal with the companys headquarters in California.

So, Facebook is avoiding higher privacy compliance and still benefiting from lower taxation in one fell swoop. In other words, operating the same as they ever have.

I also blocked facebook from my email -- any emails from them will never reach me.
I will have the option to go back in - but I doubt I will for next few months.

(56 posts)I myself sometimes go crazy with what I read on FB...but I do get a lot of great information and articles and staying informed on it....and I have family who loves to see my family pictures, and I use it to promote music events and post videos, and I have some friends who post some wacky stuff that provokes intelligent and fun discussions.
It's kind of a "goddamn it...if only I could have another social forum that was as packed with all the goodies and not the bad stuff, and I'd SO leave...in a heartbeat...like I left Myspace for Facebook.

(358 posts)I work for a US company with many EU citizen users, and we are up to our ears in GDPR (EU's data privacy law, taking effect 25 May). All our data processing takes place in the US. And, because of US/EU treaty we are obligated to enact EU data privacy controls regardless. This article is all wet.

The accounts are from places like Australia, New Zealand, etc.
