San Diego County supervisors vote 3-1 to support the Trump lawsuit against California sanctuary law
Source: San Diego Union-Tribune
The San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 to support the Trump administrations lawsuit against California over laws that the state passed last year to limit its role in immigration enforcement.
The county will file an amicus brief at the first available opportunity, likely if and when the case moves to a higher court on appeal, said Kristin Gaspar, supervisor for the county district stretching from Miramar to Encinitas and Escondido and chairwoman of the board.
The San Diego County supervisors who voted to support the lawsuit said for them, it was about public safety.
Were talking about people who are crossing the border illegally, coming into this county and committing a crime and them being let loose probably to commit another crime, said Dianne Jacob, supervisor for the district that covers East County. That creates a public safety issue and creates a problem in our neighborhoods.

(28,136 posts)I grew up in this county.
It is a lot less red than years ago but it's still an area filled with politically ignorant people.

(206,601 posts)Most of New York leans Republican, but we're a "blue state" because of the more populated city. And San Diego is such a nice area, lots to see and do, not to mention the great weather. And that's one thing you can't say about New York - we had an ice storm over the weekend.

(21,711 posts)I lived in South Orange County for a decade or so.
The Bush calamity - and the steep losses that came with it for most area homeowners - diluted their support for the GOP somewhat; but it's still fertile ground for these neo-fascists taking over the GOP in recent decades.
North Orange County is a different story. It's less affluent and much more ethnically diverse, and as you know that part of OC went strongly for Hillary.
What keeps South OC voting for far-right Republicans? Hatred of people from south of the border - when they're not hiring undocumented maids and gardeners, of course.

(32,073 posts)That area has been conservative for a long time. Did you know: Prior to the 2016 election, the last time Orange County voted for the Democratic presidential candidate was for FDR in 1936?
Goes without saying that more urbanized parts of the country vote for Democrats due to preferring cooperative ("SOCIALIST!" policies, while more rural, isolated parts of the country prefer the individualistic, self-reliant policies of Republicans.

(21,711 posts)But most are upper-middle class homes mortgaged to the hilt. Not much construction since around '03, owing to the very unaffordability ($700,000-$1 million for a typical home).
You do see a lot of delusions of grandeur, that's for sure.

(2,574 posts)Our County Board of antique Supervisors thrives in voter obscurity. It's really hard to actually even find out how long they get elected for, when each is up for reelection (I just searched for about 30 minutes) and I'm not even sure a supervisor's party is designated on any ballot. For years they also had no term limits and I think even got to draw themselves their own districts.
Hopefully this atrocious vote against Sanctuary Cities will finally spotlight our long entrenched County Republican 90's Relic.. 3 (maybe 4 soon) of San Diego County's 5 Congresspeople are Democrats. The San Diego City Council is majority Dem and strongly passed a resolution against Trump's Wall and supports SD as a Sanctuary City. I believe this ignorant, racist vote will be unpopular with San Diegans throughout the County & hopefully begin to break the Republican lock on our County Board of Supervisors.
But it has strategically served Gaspar.the newest Supervisor, who drove this Board campaign and vote against sanctuary cities. She is running for Issa's Congressional seat & surely hoping this will solidify her cred with the RW ignorant/ hate voter. And in a field with so many Dems running against each other, that contingent could easily get her into the top 2 & onto the Nov ballot. She certainly has the local Repub machine and the national Repub filth infrastructure (Koch et alios) behind her. .

San Diego County voters this week voted for the losing presidential contender for the first time since Republican Bob Dole won here in 1996, and lost the presidency.
The majority of voters in San Diego County chose Democrat Hillary Clinton, who lost the nationwide election.
With approximately 620,000 mail and provisional ballots still to be counted, Clinton led with 56 percent of the vote to Trumps 39 percent.
Republicans failed to win anything in 2016

The problem is that County Commissioners don't have party affiliation.
Most of the issues with the Board of Supervisors have to do with unincorporated part of the city and those folks include a lot of far right folks that are well organized.
The City and County of San Diego is Democratic and most of the Republicans in the suburbs are moderates.
President Obama carried the county twice and Sec Clinton won it in a landslide, most people don't pay attention to the County Commissioners who run without party affiliation.

(5,803 posts)covers a lot of rural areas in the county, which are dominated by RW white racists. Dianne Jacob and Horn are known idiots.
Supervisor Cox's remark pretty much sums it up:
The boards vote is a largely symbolic move that will create fear and divisiveness in our region, waste taxpayer funds and create distrust of law enforcement and local government within many communities, Cox said.
BigmanPigman
(51,649 posts)which we are again, but it costs A LOT to live here. The area is mostly blue/urban. The large number of military bases and their families accounts for the Republican voters as well as the RW counties where Issa and Duncan Hunter got the votes. We had a Dem mayor, Bob Filner, but he molested tons of women and he had to quit, so now we have a conservative mayor again.
"Robert Earl Filner (born September 4, 1942) is a former American politician who was the 35th Mayor of San Diego from December 2012 through August 2013, when he resigned amid multiple allegations of sexual harassment. He later pleaded guilty to state charges of false imprisonment and battery. He is a member of the Democratic Party."

(9,538 posts)Besides being terrible for immigrants and their families, this action misses the deadline to actually join the lawsuit.
So they're paying to have county counsel draft a letter that can't even be submitted in support of the suit until it's heard by a trial court and then only if the losing side files an appeal.
That could take a long time in our overloaded court system. If it's delayed until January or later, Supervisors Horn and Roberts will be gone due to term limits (Horn voted for this debacle) and Gaspar, who also voted for it, could possibly be out if (heaven forbid) she wins her Congressional race against Scott Peters.
So there's a good chance new Supervisors could be Democrats or more moderate Republicans (Cox is Republican and voted no).
In two more years, Jacob and Cox will also be off the board due to term limits, so we will be seeing a complete turnover of these 5 Republicans soon, one way or another.
My bet is the next election will sweep in some liberals, since the marijuana industry will be funding challengers big time after Supervisors voted to prohibit all marijuana sales in unincorporated areas of the county, even though the state has legalized it.

My question is have ever a police officer gone to court in Superior Court in California on wrongful deaths

Apparently the right wing board of supervisors in the county.......................have blinders on when it comes to "public safety"

(4,947 posts)I'd say it is purple now. We've had Democratic mayors. North County is also moving blue but slower than the city itself. East County?....UGH! Very rural, very conservative...Think Duncan Hunter (both Sr. & Jr.) This is the area they represented.
