McConnell: I Will Not Bring a Mueller Protection Bill up for a Senate Vote

Source: Talking Points Memo

Just two days before the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider legislation to protect Special Counsel Robert Mueller from being fired, Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) made clear he had no intention of letting such bill be brought up for a full Senate vote.

Im the one who decides what we take to the floor. Thats my responsibility, as the Majority Leader and we will not be having this on the floor of the Senate, McConnell told Fox News Neil Cavuto Tuesday. He reiterated his previous claims that such legislation is not necessary and that there is no indication that President Trump would fire Mueller.

I dont think the President is going to do that. And just as a practical matter, even if we passed it, why would he sign it? McConnell said.

This defines him. He will not even allow a vote. And he says Trump won't fire Mueller. Now, we will see about that, when Muller indicts Trump's son.

90lbs Of Cocaine Found On Ship Owned By Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's Father-in-Law

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

Though Foremost has played a pivotal role in McConnell’s life, bestowing the senator with most of his personal wealth and generating thousands in donations to his campaign committees, the drug bust went unnoticed in Kentucky, where every bit of McConnell-related news has generated fodder for the campaign trail. That’s because, like many international shipping companies, Chao’s firm is shrouded from public view, concealing its identity and limiting its legal liability through an array of tax shelters and foreign registrations. Registered through a limited liability company in the Marshall Islands, the Ping May flies the Liberian flag.

From the Nation article: Mitch McConnell’s Freighted Ties to a Shadowy Shipping Company

Well this is interesting. Particularly with the Senate Minority Leader (and major Republican establishment crony) fighting for his life in the Kentucky Senate race.

From the Nation:

Before the Ping May, a rusty cargo vessel, could disembark from the port of Santa Marta en route to the Netherlands in late August, Colombian inspectors boarded the boat and made a discovery. Hidden in the ship’s chain locker, amidst its load of coal bound for Europe, were approximately 40 kilograms, or about 90 pounds, of cocaine. A Colombian Coast Guard official told The Nation that there is an ongoing investigation.

The seizure of the narcotics shipment in the Caribbean port occurred far away from Kentucky, the state in which Senator Mitch McConnell is now facing a career-defining election. But the Republican Senate minority leader has the closest of ties to the owner of the Ping May, the vessel containing the illicit materials: the Foremost Maritime Corporation, a firm founded and owned by McConnell’s in-laws, the Chao family.

McConnell’s ties to the Chaos go back to the late 1980s, when James Chao began donating to the senator. In 1993, McConnell married James’s daughter, Elaine Chao, a Republican activist and then-former Reagan administration official who would later serve as Secretary ofLabor in the George W. Bush cabinet. James Chao emigrated to the United States from Taiwan, and founded the Foremost Maritime Corporation upon settling in New York. The company has grown significantly over the years, from acting as maritime agent during the Vietnam War to controlling a fleet of approximately 16 dry bulk cargo ships in operation today

functions of the Senate. Our government will not hold without a strong system of checks and balances to control the excesses of a branch that is running amuck.

The consequences of both McConnell and Ryan's weakness and craven inaction will bring us to a Constitutional crises that will be far worse than the heat they would take by upholding their responsibility to preserve the separation of powers.

In case you missed the “but her emails” memo, the minority party, and the voice of minorities in general have been marginalized to an extent I haven’t seen in my lifetime. So, what would be the pointless, and useless response you’d expect from Senator Schumer?

Please, do feel free to join those of us that would rather attack the turtle for what he does say, instead of attacking Democratic Party leadership for what they didn’t. Maybe?

It's not like there is more than one branch of government mentioned in the constitution, right? It's not like the dept of the senate actually has authority to enact legislation or establish the rules of the government.

What were you guys thinking?

Of course the senate shouldn't act just because the president doesn't like it. He is the deciderer after all.

Can ANY of you point to just one vote where the senate or house passed legislation knowing the president wouldn't sign it?

Of course you can't. You'd have to name about 200 votes. Not just one.

Doubtful many (if any) Senators of either party would want to go on record with a vote AGAINST protecting Mueller,

They KNOW they'll then get called out by a ton of people if they do.

Which means it'd go to Trump's desk with a WAY veto-proof majority.

Trump absolutely would NOT WANT to sign it, obviously. Turtleman knows that and he knows why. He's also probably knee-deep in Rubles himself.

He also knows that then Trump, once it hit his desk, would turn around and go back to Turtle and beg him to get up to the needed 33 GOP votes on 'No' (providing the margin that the veto isn't overridden I mean) that he was nowhere near to ... the first time around.

Turtle doesn't need that headache, nor does he want 34 GOP Senators on record with a vote to NOT protect Mueller, even less does he want like 15-20 of those Senators to chicken out and 'go back' on their original votes to avoid the override.

So then he has to go back to Trump and tell him 'I can't pull it off' so Trump will have no real choice but to just sign it because getting his veto overridden is the WORST POSSIBLE 'look' for him. Esp. w/his fucking ego.

There's literally NO scenario where letting this come to the Floor is a 'winning' strategy for Turtleman, so he's just taking his ball and going home like the little butt-licking Trump Toadie and Traitor ... he is and has always been.

Tue Apr 17, 2018, 08:31 PM
Apr 2018

McConnell asserts two things: that he won't bring a vote to the floor AND Trumpy won't fire Mueller. But McConnell only has control over ONE of those two possible actions. McConnell is also implying that he needn't bring a vote to the floor BECAUSE Trumpy won't fire Mueller, as if it's a matter of efficiency (and decency). But here's the thing: McConnell is effectively saying that he's limiting his own actions depending on Trumpy's antecedent actions. But that's a false impression because McConnell nonetheless leaves himself open to a reaction against Trumpy, if he DOES fire Mueller. McConnell preserves for himself an option. He sets the stage for a showdown between himself and Trumpy, one that he's sure he'll win. It's the journey for him; not the destination.

Can McConnell NOT take action to protect Mueller if Mueller gets fired, thus making McConnell a fool for believing in his version of Trumpy? How will McConnell save face then? If Trumpy proves McConnell to be a naive fool, McConnell must prove otherwise, or he loses his prestige in the Senate for being Trumpy's doormat in the same manner as Paul Ryan. If a similar sequence occurs before the November elections and McConnell is disgraced by Trumpy, it's a sure thing that the Dems take over the Senate. McConnell wants a demonstration of power, and he's setting the stage for leading a late Senate rally to defeat Trumpy.

I don't think any of it is wise. McConnell ought to be saving his last micrograms of testosterone for more rewarding ventures. He's a fool to play the chess game he's trying to manufacture. He has a chance right now to not only lead the Senate, but all of Congress, by actively opposing Trumpy and protecting Mueller. He can lobby for a veto override if he has to. But instead, he's moving at... a turtle's pace.
