President Trumps job approval rating slipped 4 points in a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.
Thirty-nine percent of respondents now approve of the job the president is doing, compared to 57 percent who disapprove.Trump's support fell among Republicans, whites, men, independents, women and Democrats. He gained support with voters between 18 and 34 years old. One month ago, Trumps job approval stood at 43 percent in the poll.
The presidents job approval stands at 40 percent in a Washington Post/ABC News poll also released Sunday morning.
Pollsters for NBC News and The Wall Street Journal also found Democrats with a 7-point advantage ahead of the midterm elections.

(1,701 posts)How can 40% of the American public approve of Trump's performance? Does Fox really have that many viewers? Are people just not paying attention? Everything that he has done is harmful.

(7,968 posts)There are that many Americans who think this guy isn't the worst ever?
I guess I don't get it. Apparently many people only pay attention to the news every now and then and have essentially no clue.

(9,911 posts)But, for now, I'll try to take some comfort in the apparent downward trend.
Someone pointed out that Nixon continued to have pretty decent numbers even after Watergate hearings started and revelations started coming- and they only REALLY took a nosedive when The Tapes became part of the conversation. . . some voters need to be hit by a 2X4 to start paying attention.

(23,875 posts)What bothers me is the Daily Gallup Tracking Poll. For most of 2017 the daily tracking had him at 35% - 38% approval, occasionally dropping to 34% & 33%. Now this year the approval is tracking at 38% - 40%. It's almost as if people have begun to accept him for what he is and are ready to ignore what a train wreck he is.
Other major polls also show an improvement. Most of these also were tracking in the mid 30% range last year. Now they're edging up as well.

(5,210 posts)his poll numbers have slipped.
And yet the lowest I've ever seen was 37% (IIRC, once maybe) -- and most of them were higher than that.
When are they REALLY going to slip??

(58,785 posts)his most hard-core supporters finally realized they'd backed a loser. And that happened not when they became enlightened about all the wrong he'd done but when they ran out of time for him to turn into the strong man they thought they'd elected.
In the months before that, support among other conservatives diminished into the low 30s, and eventually the upper 20s. It was only at the very end, though, that overall support dropped temporarily into the lower teens.
That Russian analyst, whatshername, who writes about what it's like to live in an authoritarian system said the way to break authoritarian support is to show followers that the strong man they chose as their leader is a dud.
That might happen faster with Trump, but from what I'm reading not any time soon and not before impeachment or some terrible disaster. The various "attacks" of truth just prove again and again that electing this great and good leader has generated unprecedented opposition from evil, undemocratic forces.
