Trump order targets wide swathe of public assistance programs
Source: The Hill
The Trump administration is seeking to completely revamp the countrys social safety net, targeting recipients of Medicaid, food stamps and housing assistance.
Trump is doing so through a sweeping executive order that was quietly issued earlier this week and that largely flew under the radar.
It calls on the Departments of Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Agriculture and other agencies across the federal government to craft new rules requiring that beneficiaries of a host of programs work or lose their benefits.
Trump argued with the order, which has been in the works since last year, that the programs have grown too large while failing to move needy people out of government help.

(14,950 posts)These services provide assistance to a lot of rural white areas living in poverty. A lot of trump voters get benefits.
Will the cuts be made across the board, or only in urban areas is the real question.

In all seriousness, though, I'm really worried for her. Her life depends on all those social safety net programs the Republicans so despise. She's played life by the rules and worked hard all her life; she didn't wake up one day and decide, "I think my life is too good, I think I'll have a debilitating degenerative disease." It's the cards she's been dealt, and she's doing the best she can to get through every day. She doesn't need the added stress of knowing that her access to food or medical care could be eliminated in an instant by some Republican's pen.
Trump isn't the problem -- it's the entire Republican establishment. They've wanted to screw over everyone who's not rich ever since the Great Society became the accepted norm. Reagan was the real starting point, with Dubya and now IQ45 accelerating the attack. Now that they've figured out how to do it on the sly, it's even more important to be diligent and active. They're not going to be satisfied until they own everything -- and everyone.

give dirty donnie some credit. he didn't come up with this on his own. the kook brothers pull his and mulvaney's strings.
Although he's vicious enough to be on board.
Oh, and all the deplorables and other idiots who think this is a good thing don't see the path leading from this to Social Security, Medicare, and other programs that benefit them, too.

Trump is just too stupid to understand that jobs need to be available.
Or, maybe that is the plan. Institute requirements that cannot be met, then alleging the programs aren't working and there for can be eliminated. It fits with his full-length way of not taking responsibility for the result of his actions.

(7,142 posts)but is this the order that requires people to work 30 hours/week? Employers will then have to provide benefits like insurance for them and employers won't want to do that so these people just aren't going to get hired?
Trump needs to cut costs some place those Tomahawk missiles are a million dollars a pop.

(1,002 posts)I am disabled, 66 years-old and lost pretty much all my savings due to medical bills I incurred over the course of a catastrophic illness. Without my housing voucher, I will end up camped on Colorado's public lands - and I mean TENT camping. Without my snap benefit, I will sometimes be forced to go hungry and my meals will come from the mostly past due date cans of this and that, distributed by the local senior center. Without Medicaid, I will no longer be able to afford a home care-giver who comes and helps me out when my pain gets too bad.
In short, Twitler will be signing my death warrant and those of thousands (if not millions) of Americans who are no different than I. Before my chronic health condition and resulting disability hit, I was a librarian and a teacher for 30 years. I loved my work, but now in my so-called "golden years," I feel that I have been discarded like some broken bit of machinery.
I suppose the psychopath now pretending to be our president* will be sending us all off to the soylvent green factory next.
I am very angry over all this and more than a little afraid.
