Trump's push to redo $1.3T spending bill he signed sparks GOP revolt

Source: Politico

By SARAH FERRIS and KAITLYN BURTON 04/12/2018 05:11 AM EDT

A regretful President Donald Trump wants to roll back spending in a massive omnibus bill he signed into law, but Republicans who helped craft the legislation are in open revolt. “My attitude is, your word is your bond,” House Appropriations Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen said, in his first public comments on the Trump plan.

Frelinghuysen (R-N.J.) is among more than a half-dozen appropriators who have voiced skepticism about the Trump administration’s proposal to cancel billions in spending. Nearly all said they feared that it could erode the GOP’s bargaining power in future budget talks. Their objections represented another low point in an often-tense relationship between the cost-cutting White House and GOP members of Congress who write spending bills.

The skeptics included the newly appointed Senate Appropriations chief, Richard Shelby, who met with Trump on Wednesday.

“We need to look at what we agreed on with the other side and keep our word, keep our agreements,” the Alabama Republican told POLITICO just before his one-on-one with Trump.

not funny when republicans systematically lie to Americans. It's dangerous.

Dangerous republican lies.

We're not going to have budgets and appropriations until AFTER mid-terms, which is looking more and more certain to put Senate control in Democratic hands.

All these years in the Senate, would he give up power and seniority because of that idiot in the White House?

he is the most two faced person around. I'm sure he never read the bill in the first place. I wouldn't trust the f*****g moron to handle anything regarding money.

may have moved his crap out of the WH by then. They understand that a little bipartisanship might be the only thing that saves their asses. If cheetolini want to revisit something to "help" out the GOP, revisit his tax cuts. Then the budget will be a significantly less threatening prospect.

“My attitude is, your word is your bond”

does Rodney Frelinghuysen even realize as the words are leaving his mouth just how incredibly stupid that sounds in context as to whom he is referring to?

18. Frelinghuysen isn't a Trumpster. He's an old-school northeastern Republican.

His type used to dominate the GOP, but those days are long gone.

In this quotation, he's not referring to Trump, but to himself, and to the other Republicans in the House who are resisting any suggestion of reneging on the budget deal.

Frelinghuysen, incidentally, is not running for re-election. His district is competitive and is considered a prime Democratic pickup opportunity. He is personally popular there. His retirement greatly improves the chance for a flip. It's an example of how the Tea Party takeover of the Republican Party has hurt the party outside the solidly red districts.

Nothing about this statement is true.
