SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc said on Wednesday that the personal information of up to 87 million users may have been improperly shared with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, up from a previous news media estimate of more than 50 million.
Most of the 87 million people whose data was shared with Cambridge Analytica, which worked on U.S. President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, were in the United States, Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer wrote in a blog post.
Facebook said it was taking steps to restrict the personal data available to third-party app developers. (https://bit.ly/2Ejpktb)

ago according to Chris Wylie, the C A whistle blower. He sent out a form letter asking the staff to delete the mined info and return the form. That's all! No follow up either! He took their word for it. The savvy business man is not so savvy. He is a fraud. Wearing t-shirts to portray an Every man, cool tech dude is his corporate image for the US. In Russia and China he wears a suit and a tie and speaks their languages with them fluently. At the Congressional hearings this year he didn't even bother to show up in person. Fuckerberg is like all the rest of the greedy, oligarch wannabes. LIAR!!!

(153,254 posts)he is in the business of data mining - does anyone really think he expected results from a "sternly-worded" form letter?

(426 posts)It's too bad Yahoo couldn't spend a few minutes digging some up. How many US Facebook users in 2016? 200 million? How many were "active", visiting Facebook at least once a month? So maybe CA got data on nearly half of all US Facebook users (or more "active" ones)?

(129,803 posts)it seems these additional folks were scooped up and spat into the CA spittoon merely by being listed as a "friend" to a consenting user (i.e., those "friend" users had no idea of what was happening and their accounts had no option for opting in or opting out). And I expect once those "friends" were sucked in, their own "friends" unrelated to the original consenting user, probably got sucked into this as well.
It was like this -

(426 posts)Based on the x degrees of separation, CA probably got ALL US FB users that had any friends. The 100 million or so that CA didn't get (at least until the numbers get "corrected" again) were just lucky they had no friends.. and probably not FB's favorite users anyway. I don't see how this can end well for FaceBook.

(129,803 posts)It was like a virus but by having no contact with any "friend" that was infected (or having no "friend" , they weren't infected. At least with the CA "virus". Other viruses might be a different matter though!
