DNC official who called African-Americans colored people expected to quit
Source: Politico
MIAMI A Florida Democratic National Committee member who offended African-Americans for using the phrase colored people is expected to resign office Wednesday as the state party chairwoman and other officials called on him to resign echoing the comments of his own wife, the Democratic Party chair in Duval County.
John Parker, the Duval County Democratic state committeeman, had told party officials he would post his resignation on his Facebook page.
Parker had said he meant to say people of color instead of colored people and eventually apologized for his offhanded remarks Jan. 22 after a local Democratic Party meeting in Jacksonville. But others accused him of using more racially charged language claims he denied and felt their complaints were being ignored in the ensuing months.
That led to increased media scrutiny and the remarkable call by Parkers wife, Duval County Democratic Executive Committee Chair Lisa King, to say Monday that he should quit. After POLITICO published a story Wednesday on the controversy, Florida Democratic Party Chair Terrie Rizzo broke months of silence and said he needed to go.

(748 posts)Okay, I'm Canadian, so I don't always get what terms are offensive in what areas.
But I kind of thought "Colored People" would be okay because there's a "National Assoc for the Advancement of Colored People".
Then again, as you said, he's alleged to have said some other dipshit racist stuff, so I can see how this is really just an inflammatory headline, making a mole hill out of his mountain of dipshittery.

(115,924 posts)At that time "colored people" was a common and basically inoffensive term that AA people used themselves; but since then it's taken on negative connotations - not quite as bad as "n****r," obviously, but it's even so it's been used in more recent years as a put-down and a slur. At best it's regarded as insensitively old-fashioned. The distinction between "colored people" and "people of color" might seem to be a matter of mere semantics, but the term "colored people" is now widely regarded as inappropriate. People should be referred to by the names they want to be referred to. And since apparently this guy isn't merely old-fashioned, but has also said other racist things, I suspect his use of "colored people" wasn't just a slip of the tongue.

(748 posts)There's just no way for an outsider to have a clue that the term is a bad one to use until something like this happens.
The headline, mind you, makes it sound like that was the guy's only offense, which is pretty misleading.

The chances are good that he will say, "Black."
Don't say anything else. Just let it be food for thought.

(43,420 posts)the modern contemporary terms we use to refer to many things differ from early, mid, or late 20th century terms.
I won't delve into any of them as per race or ethnicity. we've heard them all. but we know there were different terms for marijuana for example.
If this was an older person who used the term, he may sound tone deaf to us, but he may think he's being everyday deferential.

(13,305 posts)I don't care how low level an official he was, but if he had enough power that people were listening to what he says then it should have been long ago apparent that he was a racist. So how did he get to this point in the Democratic party, even in Florida?

(33,643 posts)They do not, by this definition, have to actually 'teach History classes' at the time or ever. In fact you could even be an Engineer, who's focus is on 'the development of Engineering practices over the years', working in the History Dept, i.e. not technically having a Liberal Arts degree like 'History', for example.
Actual teaching in a classroom setting of 'History' of some sort is implied by 'History Professor' (either currently or in the past). And you could be a 'History Professor' at a High School as well.

(63,914 posts)"The colored girl is coming today" which meant that she was coming to clean the house.
What's the difference in that and "people of color", not much language wise but politically it is a world of difference.
Sadly, even here in liberal New Haven, I have encountered stark racism when our black friend brought his white girl friend to a Yale game (where we are part of a tailgate party). Several members of the party "disinvited" him from the party. Our friend was a Yalie and a member of the Yale varsity Lacrosse team. I argued with the members of the tailgate group, to no avail. He is now looking to form his own tailgate party group. We will of course switch to his group if he does. If he doesn't or can't, I don't know what to do.
