Deputies respond to active shooter at Florida high school
Source: NYPost
CBS 4 Miami texted with a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland near Fort Lauderdale who said theyre hiding in the closet.
All of a sudden there was a really loud noise
people are crying in the closet, the student wrote to CBS 4.
The outlet reported a number of people could be seen from their newscopter being loaded into ambulances on a stretcher.
Coral Springs police advised students and teachers in the locked-down school should remain barricaded until officers reach them.

There were 14 school shootings in January, 2018 (https://www.madisondodgeronline.com/opinion/2018/02/09/fourteen-school-shootings-have-happened-as-of-february-1st-2018/). I do not know how many have happened so far in February.
NRA: "But now is not the time to talk about school shootings" (said after every school shooting).

(26,060 posts)(I really don't care for Florida so I just wait until my friends come to NY) and we walked to that school from her house just as part of a long walk. I last heard from my friend last night around 8:30 when she texted and told me he daughter, although safe, was "wigging out".

(26,060 posts)imagine the fear you must have. Needless to say, things like this just didn't happen (at least I don't remember it happening) when I was in high school (mid 70s). I'm sure my parents never gave one thought to the scenario that happened yesterday, and 17 times before that just this year. And your wife - teachers shouldn't ever have to have "live shooter drills" - it's simply madness.

(4,742 posts)But it is always a thought at this point. I was sitting in a rather cramped venue recently at an orchestra concert. In the middle of the set I had a random thought that someone could easily just walk in and start blowing people away. That had never happened before. I smashed the thought and moved on. But we have to think about this stuff I guess.

(26,060 posts)the reality that we have a real problem with school shootings is allowing fear to overwhelm. It's just today's reality. Every year a friend and I to the Christmas tree at Lincoln Center thing in NYC, always a HUGE crowd there as well as the blocks leading up to it. It's not like you have to go through any security to walk our city streets so frankly, I'm surprised that we just take a deep breath and continue to do it. Then all the stuff going on at Madison Square Garden and all the other sports/concert arenas in the area. We can't stop living our lives but should fight with every breath we have that people don't ever consider this "normal".

He's on his knees that this buys them a few hours of non-Stormy Daniels coverage.

What could possibly be so urgent at the white house over this shooting that the press sec'y couldn't be bothered to hold the briefing?

So that looks like a 3-4 hour day to me.

(55,445 posts)The NRA will have their people on all three shows tonight with the usual pre-emptive "WHY CAN'T THOSE FREEDOM-HATING LIBS WAIT FOR THE BLOOD TO DRY BEFORE POLITICIZING THIS??!!??"
Then the NRA will deliver the usual veiled threat to any congresscritter thinking about gun regulation, they'll float the usual "And that's why we need to arm all the teachers!" which will be debated the rest of the night, and sometime next week both congress and the state of Florida will actually **loosen** current gun control laws... Rinse and repeat
