Medicaid is GOP target in 2018

Source: The Hill

Medicaid could face crucial tests in 2018 at both the federal and state levels.

Republicans in Congress failed in their attempts earlier this year to impose drastic cuts to the program as part of ObamaCare repeal, but GOP lawmakers could try again next year.

The tax bill that President Trump recently signed into law is projected to add $1 trillion to the federal deficit, making cuts to Medicaid an even more tempting target for some conservatives.

“Medicaid is front and center in any budget exercises, and now that deficits have increased, it puts Medicaid squarely in the bulls eye,” said Joan Alker, the executive director of the Georgetown University Center for Children and Families.

Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has said he wants to bring down entitlement spending, saying in December that “health-care entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid are the big drivers of debt.”

I hope the Dems run on this and possible losses in Social Security and Medicare, tax cuts for the 1%, and Russian collusion. The Repub base/cult doesn't care about morals when THEIR side shows lack of any so we can't use that against them.

Many of us in the middle class don't understand that Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security prevent families from being bankrupted by caring for their parents. It's a very small price to pay.

If we were on the hook for all those expenses we could either try to pay them, at the expense of caring for ourselves and our children, or let our parents suffer and die.

Republicans validate any sexism, antisemitism, racism or homophobia among their working class constituents. In return, they go along with wealthy's demands to roll back benefits and give up tax cuts to the rich. It almost poetic in a way. You pretty much sell your soul, or in this case your healthcare, in order to indulge any evil intolerance and hate you have toward your fellow Americans.

Don't worry. Even progressives can sometimes succumb to the temptation of catering to hate. Some progressives have catered to xenophobia by pushing anti-immigrant and anti-trade policies. Even FDR ordered the placement of Japanese Americans into concentration camps during WW2 even though whites with German and Italian heritage were not subject to the same treatment.

There is time for us to create a better, happier world, but we can’t sit back and expect a miracle. Sat Dec 30, 2017, 02:54 PM

they don't stay gerrymandered forever. Populations don't remaining static for long and we're 8 years on since most of the data these districts are based on was gathered. Thus, things might not work quite as well as they did a few election cycles ago. We saw in Alabama that suppression can be overwhelmed and we have a very, very energized base. Add to that a historically unpopular pResident and some rather noxious legislation already passed that particularly affects Rethugs in blue states. On top of all that, they're contemplating fucking with grandma's Medicare and taking healthcare away from poor people. My feeling is they're going for broke because they know they're cooked in 2018 and even the Speaker could very well lose. In fact, I expect him to.

they are starting with Medicaid. They think most 'Muricans figure it only helps the poor, so it's A-OK to deprive those useless eaters of healthcare.

Of course, the fallacies in thinking that way are that Medicaid also pays for granny's nursing home so the family doesn't have to provide 'round-the-clock care, and that first they come for the poor, then they come for the middle class.

Randi Rhodes nailed it recently: the tax cuts under raygun and chimpy were paid for by looting programs for the poor. Now, for this round of tax cuts, they are planning to loot programs for the middle class, plus the few crumbs that still benefit the poor.

the majority of people on Medicaid are either elderly, disabled, poor children, or people who work and just can't make enough money to afford the health insurance industry gouging?

I don't know why they think that everyone on Medicaid is a lazy leech who refuses to work. Granted there may be a few, but the overwhelming majority are not.
