Trump Fires HIV/AIDS Council in Its Entirety

TRUMP FIRES HIV/AIDS COUNCIL IN ITS ENTIRETY BY FEDEX LETTER, REPORT CLAIMS
BY CALLUM PATON ON 12/29/17 AT 6:00 AM
President Donald Trump fired the remaining members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) Wednesday, reportedly informing them without explanation with a letter delivered by FedEx.
The mass dismissal of the advisers marked another nadir in the administrations dealing with the council. In June, six members resigned from PACHA writing in an open letter, published in Newsweek, saying the Trump White House was pushing for legislation that would harm people living with HIV.
Scott A. Schoettes, a Chicago-based HIV/AIDS activist and one of the members of the advisory panel who resigned over the summer, tweeted yesterday that the remaining council members had been fired for calling President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence dangerous.
Remaining #HIV/AIDS council members booted by @realDonaldTrump. No respect for their service, Schoettes wrote on the social media site. Dangerous that #Trump and Co. (Pence esp.) are eliminating few remaining people willing to push back against harmful policies, like abstinence-only sex ed, he added.
Sources with knowledge of the terminations told the Washington Blade that council members had been fired despite having more time on their appointments.
Gabriel Maldonado, CEO of the LGBT and HIV/AIDS group Truevolution and a remaining member of PACHA said the reasons for the firings remain unclear but may have been borne of a desire by the Trump administration to clear out appointments made by his predecessor Barack Obama.
I can only speculate, Maldonado said. Like any administration, they want their own people there. Many of us were Obama appointees. I was an Obama appointee and my term was continuing until 2018.
The decision by an administrator to clear house at PACHA is not unprecedented. The Obama administration eliminated all of George W. Bushs appointees in the same way.
However, HIV/AIDS activists have been deeply critical of the White Houses approach over the past year. In the 2018 fiscal year budget Trump has sought huge cuts to programs including $150 million on HIV/AIDS at the Centers of Disease Control. The administration has also sought more than than $1 billion in cuts from global programs like the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria.
Just under a year into his first term, Trump has yet to appoint an HIV/AIDS chief, the first time since Bill Clinton created the position in 1993 that a president has failed to do so.

(33,643 posts)First off, it's not a business you dipshit, it's a public service.
And it was ridiculous GOP Congress-critter demands on the USPO setting aside funding for 75 years worth of pensions over a ridiculously short time-frame ... that is presently making their books look bad.
A purposeful SCAM by Republicans to weaken the PO so they could argue to get rid of it or scale it back, or force it to raise prices so that UPS, FedEx, etc ... 'look better' by comparison, thus 'proving' their zombie-like insistence that 'Free Market ALWAYS BETTER'.
They don't wan't the public realizing that COLLECTIVELY doing things, as a SOCIETY, like creating Postal Services that work as just as well if not better than private companies ... is not such a bad idea.
Why THEN ... we'll wanna start doing all KINDS of things 'together' ... like a establishing a National Health Service ... or a National Oil Company ... and crap like that.
All Trump wants is to DESTROY what's taken us CENTURIES as a society to build, and to kill as many poor/sick/old people as he possibly can.

(32,833 posts)A lot of the HIV/AIDS victims are black or other minorities. They get it from needles or another lifestyle choice. I'm sure it's easy for the right-wingers and evil repukes to find reasons to hate them, without going into the "gay disease" epithet.
Of course I could be wrong, but I recall the early days of the AIDS crisis when Reagan was Pres. A lot of indifference and shrugging of shoulders when they believed it was poor Haitian immigrants who had it. Then some high-level Hollywood celebrities died of AIDS (Rock Hudson) and sports stars (Arthur Ashe), and suddenly it was an important cause.
But heck that was over 25 years ago. Republicans could care less about that stuff now.
