Speaker Paul Ryan: 'Minds are going to change' on Republican tax bill

Source: ABC News

By VERONICA STRACQUALURSI Dec 20, 2017, 7:07 AM ET

House Speaker Paul Ryan addressed the criticism today that the Republicans' tax bill would benefit the wealthy over the middle-class.

"I think minds are going to change and I think people are going to change their view on this," Ryan, R-Wis., said on "Good Morning America" Wednesday as Republicans are on the verge of passing a massive rewrite of the tax code.

"We’re convinced that this is one of the key ingredients to fiscal discipline," he added.

The Senate passed the $1.5 trillion bill early Wednesday morning, 51-48, with the vote down party lines. The bill now heads back to the House to be re-voted on after the Senate parliamentarian found that three provisions of the measure violated a Senate budget rule.

So you may see more in your paycheck, but it doesn't change the amount you owe at the end of the year. Like everything else this repuke congress does, it is a scam

People will see the real effects in April 2019, when they file their 2018 tax returns.

Those in high tax states like CA, NJ, NY, PA, MA, etc., will really feel it with the reduction in Taxes deductible.

So it looks like you get more in your paycheck, still doesn't mean you owe less at the end of the year. If you owe $150 for the year, they should be taking out about $10/month in taxes and then you owe $30 at the end of the year. If they take out $5 per month in taxes, you owe $90 at the end of the year. You are still paying $150 in taxes, it is when you are paying them that makes a difference. So your paycheck looks bigger.

extra in our paycheck (which we will see in a few weeks) is really insignificant... what we won't see right away and nobody is talking about is all the ways we will pay more in our lives; whether social costs, environmental costs, cuts in programs we depend on and benefit by, etc, etc.......

this is a dirty tax bill and we need to start to get people ready to vote in every election

Only heavy itemizers. It is diabolical in that detail. I still can't believe it is $1.5T. There is no way that it doesn't cost more than that (especially considering how much more porous revenues will be once the accountants and lawyers get done).

They will use the tax break they used to rob the American people to say "SEE??? We told you we need greater control of spending" and bring forth austerity.

They're deciding to "discipline" themselves and they'll wait until 2019 to do it.
I hope most of them will be gone by then.

As Republicans turn the final corner on their tax bill, top GOP leaders have already identified their next frontier for 2018: a push to enact sweeping budget cuts on programs the poorest Americans depend on.

House Speaker Paul Ryan and other top Republican leaders, fresh off a tax bill that is estimated to add at least $1 trillion to the national debt, are already sounding the alarm about an out-of-control deficit problem. Their targets for closing the gap include Social Security, Medicare, and food stamps.

“We're going to have to get back next year at entitlement reform, which is how you tackle the debt and the deficit,” Ryan said on a talk radio show. One of his top spending appropriators echoed the sentiment. link

------------------------------

Social Security and Medicare are not entitlements, they are earned benefits, and each time the Dems let the GOP define the argument, they automatically lose.

They shot their wad on this tax bill (excuse the expression.)

These Republicans - cannot - write legislation and they can barely pass the laws their lobbyists write.
They're done for now. Good thing too, it gives the Dems time to figure out how to beat this thing.
I'm sure NY and CA will take it to the Supreme Court, probably other states will too.

If I remember I saw an article recently where they said that Iowa ranked last in nearly every category on fiscal responsibility. That is what GOP policies will do to a state. And yet, they still vote red.

"We’re convinced that this is one of the key ingredients to fiscal discipline," he added. "

Show me when, in the past 35 years, the GOP has had any fiscal discipline. They always drive the country into debt by giving tax breaks to the rich. That is fact.

Yeah, minds are going to change, and when they do, there will be some tar and feathering going on. Starting with Lyin' Ryan.

haha, says the guy about to add a trillion to the deficit. I remember 2 tax cuts in the early 2000's that were supposed to spur the economy on and they did for a short time and then the economy tanked. Let's be real, when Ryan says "fiscal discipline", this is a precursor to them coming back and doing things like welfare "reform" as well as medicaid, medicare and social security "reform" as well.

When employment and wages don't go up as promised, people will go into conservation mode and that will cause a recession if not a depression. Austerity doesn't work and never has. This will have global consequenses.

No way that it will remain at 85% of Republicans who would vote the same way again once they realize whats in it, or not in it, for them. At least a few of them who inadvertently glance at any other network other than Fox. Or glance at any other website other than Breitbart or Infowars or Newsmax.
