Toronto synagogues among several across Canada to receive anti-Semitic hate mail
Source: 680 News Canada
Four Toronto synagogues are among 10 across the country that have received disturbing anti-Semitic hate mail.
According to Bnai Brith Canada, Adath Israel Congregation and three other synagogues were sent a letter with the phrase Jewry Must Perish written around an image of a swastika inside a bleeding Star of David.
I think they are being trouble makers, maybe they hope that they will upset people in the Jewish community, said Rabbi David See, Adath Israel Congregation. I think what it does is turns the table in a positive way. People reach out and say
this is terrible. This is not what we as a country stand for.'
Toronto police wouldnt confirm all four Toronto incidents but said they have received two separate reports of hate mail to date one to Beth Tzedec Synogogue and one to a private business in the Dufferin Street and Finch Avenue area.

Surely, just people displeased with some policy or something.

(11,841 posts)I dont recall ever seeing any Jews call for everyone else to convert to Judaism. Cant remember the last time I saw or heard of a video made by Jews that called for the wanton murder of pretty much everyone not like them. Or the last time a Jew ran over a crowd of people headed to work. Or shot up a school. Or a restaurant. Etc, etc......

(35,813 posts)It looks like a too-organized attempt to make Canadians doubt their kind, open culture.

(26,060 posts)was to a Canadian. Many reasons we didn't walk down the aisle - one of them being his mother hated me for being Jewish. As I recall (and this was 35 years ago) her exact quote was "like should marry like".

(35,813 posts)Are there anti-Semites everywhere? For sure. And maybe they were behind this series of attacks. But the article doesn't say. I'm sure more backstory will follow. Overall, would you say the U.S. is an anti-semitic country? Probably not.

(35,813 posts)Anti-Semitism has been around for centuries. The likelihood that it's on the rise in Canada isn't surprising, yet I doubt that it's any more probable, given this country's anti-Semitism, than in any of the countries in which 90% of the world's Jewish population reside.

(35,813 posts)The article doesn't say. I'd rather err on the side of the general cultural climate of Canada having more sway than what looks like an organized attack across the country.
I'm sure Canada's law enforcement will get to the bottom of this, and never think of Canadians as simple glarers.

(748 posts)Racism is a good rope to reach for. If you actually took away the people that racists look down on, the racists would be forced realize what kind of awful, pathetic people they are.
But while they have their imagined superiority to <whomever>, they've at least got something.
But anti-semitism specifically ... it's a long history of passed down bigotry.

(203,035 posts)I was certainly aware of the atrocities that happened during WWII, and this documentary series chronicled not only Jewish history, but the incidence of antisemitism - across the globe - that went back centuries. Having had Jewish friends and neighbors all my life, I never realized. And apparently it's still alive today.
