Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport crippled by power outage
Source: CNN
Atlanta (CNN)A power outage at the world's busiest airport left thousands of passengers stranded in dark terminals and in planes sitting on the tarmac, as a ground stop for Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International disrupted air travel across the United States.
The outage affected all airport operations. Georgia Power said the cause has not yet been determined, though it may have involved a fire that caused extensive damage in a Georgia Power underground electrical facility. The fire impacted substations serving the airport.
Atlanta is the heart of the US air transport system, and the disruption led to flight delays and cancellations across the country. More than six hours into the outage, power was restored to one of seven concourses. The utility said it expected full power to be restored by midnight.

It's up to you of course; but I'll be happy to do it.

He voted for Trump if that gives you additional motivation to kick his ass though.

(14,907 posts)Is that airports long ago were directed to ensure they had multiple power feeds, from different substations, coming in at different places. Ditto for communications and data links. They are also supposewd to have generators for airport operations and safety.
So why didn't ATL? Presumably one of the busiest airports in america/world didn't have reduncy built in for power loss?

(12,160 posts)It has two separate power feeds with 3 back up generators and 3 environmental systems. It seems that one of the largest airports in the country could do as well.

(14,907 posts)They have lost a minimum of 2 days on the ground there already, and they only have a confirmed route for one, not both.
They may have to bag the trip and take the losses for cancellations. All because some beancounter and some exec didn't see the need to spend the money.

As awful as it is for the passengers, the employees are in hell. I know. I used to be one of those employees.
And when I worked flights usually weren't totally full all the time. Plus, passengers weren't checking themselves in at the kiosks, so there was a better employee/passenger ratio when things went bad.

(25,919 posts)I tell people that being an airline ticket agent was the hardest job I've ever done, including childbirth.
Once, when my oldest was an infant, and I was with a group of mothers also with their infants, one mom sighed and said, "This is the hardest job I've ever had." I stared at her in amazement and said, "I can't imagine a job as easy as this."
And it wasn't as if she had an unusually difficult baby, just your normal sleeps erratically, cries randomly poops as soon as you've gotten the new diaper inn place, and the like. Those things do make an infant a challenge, but boy, was that easier than stuff like massively delayed and cancelled flights.

something else is going on here.

(14,907 posts)stuff works and all they have are political yes types who don't know a generator from a septic truck.
how much you wanna bet their emergency service exec's are airline hacks.....

(4,959 posts)ATLANTA The lights were back on Monday, but it was not business as usual at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Atlanta a day after a nearly 11-hour power loss caused more than a thousand flight cancellations.
And a thick layer of fog rolling into Atlanta on Monday morning threatened to make the holiday travel nightmare even worse.
More than 400 flights were canceled Monday at the worlds busiest airport and 42 flights were delayed, according to FlightAware.com, after the massive outage left travelers stuck inside airport terminals and in some cases aboard planes for hours.
That number was an improvement from the 1,173 flights and 207 delays on Sunday.
