Death threats target NJ Senator Cory Booker

NEWARK, N.J. (WPVI) --

Police are stepping up security for New Jersey Senator Cory Booker after he and his family received death threats.

According to a statement from the mayor of Newark, New Jersey, the US Capitol Police notified law enforcement in that city about the threat.

As a result, Newark Police sent members of its Executive Protection Unit to provide security at Booker's home.

The mayor also says the two police agencies are working together to ensure Booker's safety.

"Doug Jones may still be reveling in his dramatic victory in the Alabama Senate race, but there's another winner closer to home: Jersey's U.S. Sen. Cory Booker .

Booker traveled to Alabama on behalf of Jones, who upset Republican Roy Moore Tuesday to become the first Democrat to represent the state in the U.S. Senate in more than two decades.

"The early analysis seems to show huge turnout by young people and African-Americans for Doug Jones," said Matthew Hale, a political science professor at Seton Hall University. "Cory Booker is a rock star among both those groups so he was clearly played a role in the victory."....(more)

Southern right-wingers don't take kindly to Yankees getting the best of them
- least of all an African-American.

And 'don't take kindly' in the Deep South usually means violence, or threats of violence at least.
