Diplomat rips Tillerson, Trump administration in resignation letter
Source: The Hill
A U.S. Foreign Service officer slammed the Trump administration and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson in a letter announcing her departure from the State Department.
In the letter, which was first reported by Foreign Policy, Elizabeth Shackelford criticized the administration for the stinging disrespect she argues it shows the diplomatic corps.
I have deep respect for the career Foreign and Civil Service staff who, despite the stinging disrespect this Administration has shown our profession, continue the struggle to keep our foreign policy on the positive trajectory necessary to avert global disaster in increasingly dangerous times, Shackelford writes.
With each passing day, however, this task grows more futile, driving the Departments experienced and talented staff away in ever greater numbers, Shackelford added.

(21,688 posts)Since World War II, they've tried to undermine State because they've never believed in it - or, in many cases, that it should even exist.
Those that would keep it in existence, prefer that it be an arm of the Pentagon, and little else.

(49,047 posts)It goes back before the John Birchers, of course. And the hard core Trumpanzees are the main proponents these days.
In its more generalized form, it is somewhat softer and less extreme but as you say it is part of the GOP philosophy, more or less.

(19,204 posts)until I saw billboards in south-central Florida about 15 years ago, signed by the John Birch Society. I had just moved to Sebring, Florida thinking it was such a lovely, quiet place, and to be near my 85 yr. old mother. I was spending more time flying back and forth to Florida, with her myriad illnesses, than I was at home anyway.
I lived there three years, and moved - screaming - back to New York, as fast as I could. I can handle snow and cold much easier than 100 degrees and 100% humidity in the summer months (which is 8 months out of the year there), and living among some of the most hateful, racist people on the planet. Mom ended up moving back north as well, and she's STILL ALIVE TODAY! Northern weather makes for hale and hearty people. Incessant heat makes people freaking crazy.
The John fucking Birch Society.

(160,647 posts)I humbly recommend you follow me out the door: Star diplomat quits State Dept with blistering letter to Tillerson

A rising star in the U.S. State Department has quit after delivering a blistering letter to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, excoriating him for destroying the work they have done and damaging the reputation of the country across the world.
According to Yahoo News, Elizabeth Shackelford, who served as a political officer based in Nairobi for the U.S. mission to Somalia, was scathing in her appraisal of the department under Tillerson.
The cost of this is visible every day in Mission Somalia, my current post, where States diplomatic influence, on the country and within our own interagency, is waning, Shackelford wrote in the letter obtained by Foreign Policy.
According to Shackelford, who also lamented the departure of other career diplomats, if Tillerson is unable to stem the bleeding by showing leadership and a commitment to our people, our mission, and our mandate as the foreign policy arm of the United States
I would humbly recommend you follow me out the door.
