Flynn charged with one count of making false statement
Source: CNN
Washington (CNN)Special counsel Robert Mueller has charged former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn with "willfully and knowingly" making "false, fictitious and fraudulent statements" to the FBI regarding conversations with Russia's ambassador.
Flynn is the first Trump administration official and the fourth connected to the campaign to be charged as part of Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between the Russian government and members of Trump's team, as well as potential obstruction of justice and financial crimes.
Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his deputy Rick Gates were indicted last month; they pleaded not guilty. And Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty for making a false statement to the FBI over contacts with officials connected to the Russian government.
The charge against Flynn is the first in Mueller's probe that have reached someone in the Trump White House and is the latest sign that the special counsel investigation is intensifying.

(1,897 posts)That's why it has an "A" number. But that's just an unimportant technicality. You do an accusation in lieu of a presentment to the grand jury when the defendant agrees there's probable cause for the charge and they're going to plead guilty to it. That's the million dollar fact. There has been a deal struck with Flynn and you only strike a deal to go up the food chain. Let's see, who is higher on this food chain? Hmmm. Can't quite think who it might be. Thanks for posting the link.

Former national security adviser Michael Flynn was charged Friday with making a false statement to the FBI about his contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, marking another monumental development in the wide-ranging probe of Special Counsel Robert S. Mueller III.
Flynn was expected to enter a plea at 10:30, according to the special counsels office. The charges relate to false statements Flynn made to the FBI on January 24, four days after President Trump was inaugurated, about his meeting with Kislyak during the transition.
The charges include making false statements to the FBI about asking the ambassador in late December to refrain from escalating the situation in response to sanctions that the United States had imposed against Russia that same day. Flynn also told authorities he did not recall the ambassador saying the Russians would moderate their response to Obama administration sanctions after the conversation.
Separately, authorities say Flynn lied about asking the ambassador to delay a vote on United Nations Security Council resolutions.

(136 posts)Flynn's charge of lying to the FBI has been done through an INFORMATION, not by grand jury indictment.
In most cases, this charging method is done ONLY when the defendant agrees to waive the grand jury charging process. In my view, this is a strong indication that Flynn is cooperating. The charge by Information is likely done as part of a plea agreement, with cooperation with prosecutors being a huge part of the agreement.
Trump and his people must be doing some heavy-duty sweating about this time.
Keep your popcorn handy!

(12,448 posts)I want Flynn to do a long stretch in jail as much as anyone else, but if he gives up Trump, Kushner, and Junior, I won't mind if Mueller cuts him some slack. This charge of one count of making a false statement is only the beginning. Flynn is still in trouble until he spills what he has on some key people (see above).

(6,254 posts)As a Father, I took my youngest daughter of 4 children to vote for the first time in 2016 and told her what a historic moment this was, electing the first woman president. Of course, it didnt turn out that way and looking back I am still stunned to see women chanting lock her up regarding Hillary. Except for Obama, for the most part, the men who have led this country during the past 40 years have done a lackluster job. 2016 was the time for an intelligent, thoughtful woman like Merkel in Germany to try and bring the country together. Obviously Hillary was a much more devisive figure and the enmity towards her far greater than I think we on the left expected. But still, to see these mindless, brainwashed republican woman snarl and yell lock her up to me is just incredible. As a man, I have always viewed woman as the more rational and mindful gender. And most of these women are middle age or older. I wonder if republican women reserve their hatred for all democratic women candidates or just Hillary. They embraced the female version of Trump in supporting Palin. I suspect I just answered my own question. Very sad for our country.
