Tillerson not Trump thanks Mexico for Harvey offer

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has thanked Mexico for its offer of relief for the victims of flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey.
Tillerson did not say whether the U.S. would be taking Mexico up on its offer of help, but he has said more on the matter than President Trump, who has not yet commented on Mexicos offer.
Speaking ahead of a pre-planned meeting with Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray Caso, Tillerson said Mexico had offered a wide range of assistance.
He added in comments carried by The Washington Post: It's very generous of Mexico to offer to help at this very, very challenging time for our citizens down in Texas.

(779 posts)Trump is a small minded mean jerk who does not have any redeeming qualities, not even good manners, which would cost him nothing.

(8,138 posts)I suspect this is how Trump's business managers treat him: Let him come in and make some bold, stupid statements then leave. Everybody then completely ignores him and takes care of business.

It would be interesting to see how the flooded areas rebuild without immigrant labor if Trump threatens to round up brown people whose documents might have been lost in the storm.

He knows how to act in the real world, unlike his idiotic "boss".

Wish he didn't let the State department dwindle down, but maybe he had no control over that. I don't know.

Here's a story alluding to that....

(14,178 posts)Eight weeks into his tenure as President Donald Trumps Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson has almost completely walled himself off from the rest of his department, The Washington Post reported Friday, as career diplomats have been instructed to avoid making eye contact with their boss.
Tillerson takes a private elevator to his office on the seventh floor of the State Department building, where few State employees catch a glimpse of him.
The Post suggests that Tillersons lack of communication with his department led to the embarrassing gaffe of cancelling a NATO foreign ministers meeting.
News of Tillersons timidness with his employees comes a week after the former ExxonMobil CEO admitted that he only took a job in Trumps administration because his wife told him to.
The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Eliot Engel of New York, said that he has had discussions with Tillerson and got the impression that the secretary of state disagreed with Trumps commitment to downsize the State Department.
When you put it all together, it certainly seems theyre trying to downsize the State Department and make it irrelevant. Im at a loss for words, Engel told The Post. Why would Tillerson take the job if he was not going to defend his agency?
Another senior Senate Democratic aide speculated that Tillerson has a distrust of his bureaucracy.
Part of it is a deep distrust of bureaucracy, the aide said. It sets a command climate that makes people cautious and paranoid. These folks, in their political-commissar roles, take that to an extreme. Everything we have heard is about how small the aperture is for information coming in and going out of the secretarys office. That is not a recipe for success.
Since taking over the State Department, Tillerson has fostered a sense among career diplomats that they are considered an obstacle to change, one department official told The Post.
.....
Avoid making eye contact with him? Like he thinks he's the alpha wolf? Because he's so much wealthier than his underlings?
I guess in today's world, anyone who is not Trump by comparison looks decent.

(14,178 posts)I wouldn't be surprised if he was pouting that "NOW Mexico is offering money!? For the stupid flood and the stupid people there, while my great wall is of so much more importance, and they refuse to give me a peso for THAT! I'll show them...I'm not even going to thank them as the offer was OBVIOUSLY just a stab at ME!"
This sounds a bit over the top. But with Trump, I would not be surprised if it were the case.
