PHOENIX (AP) Fresh off his presidential pardon, an emboldened Joe Arpaio on Monday lashed out at his critics and the judge who found him guilty of a crime as his attorneys went to court to throw the court decision that was the basis for his conviction.
The former Arizona sheriff struck a defiant tone in insisting he "didn't do anything wrong" and questioning whether his judge was fair. His comments came as President Donald Trump took a similar posture in defending his Friday pardon of the former lawman, blaming the Obama administration for Arpaio's troubles and calling him a "patriot" who fought against illegal immigration.
"I thought he was treated unbelievably unfairly," Trump said.
Arpaio called U.S. District Judge Susan Bolton biased and questioned the growing number of critics across the United States who denounced his pardon as a political reward for having been an early supporter of Trump's campaign.

(12,344 posts)Because accepting a pardon means implicitly admitting guilt. But a verdict also can't be changed without new evidence or an appeal, so that would be a high risk strategy for Arpaio.

(32,123 posts)The DOJ had more than one inquiry into Arpaio. They were closed without any charges or settlements. The federal court in Phoenix made a court order as a result of the original arrest in 2007. This was the basis of the contempt charge. The Obama and Trump DOJ litigated the charge and a judge made the conviction. The Bush DOJ did not have anything to do with the charge or the case.

If they reverse the conviction he has to uncommit the crime and unaccept the pardon, no?

(32,123 posts)And settled by Maricopa County. There are none left to be filed and the statute of limitations would have long run anyway. Apario is not personally responsible for civil suits. Maricopa County is.

(23,164 posts)is how long you have to wait to apply for a pardon with the Dept of Justice. He hasn't fulfilled that. You have to admit guilt in order to be pardoned. He hasn't done that. 45 thinks he's emperor, but he's just a fat little kid in an old man's body with bizarre narcissistic ideas endlessly running through his head. 45 does not have this figured out, and sloppy joe is an idiot for thinking that 45 has this in the bag.
