Harvey Is 'Quickly Strengthening': Major Hurricane Forecast To Hit Texas

Updated at 1:05 p.m. ET

Hurricane Harvey is getting stronger and could make landfall in the middle of the Texas coast as a category 3 hurricane Friday night, the National Hurricane Center says, warning of the potential for a deadly storm surge and flooding along the Gulf of Mexico.

The storm's winds were rated at 80 mph around midday on Thursday — but they could reach 115 mph in the next 36 hours, forecasters say, announcing that the Middle Texas Coast is currently under a hurricane warning.

Harvey "intensified quickly" Thursday morning and could bring a storm surge of 6-10 feet above ground level; rainfall of 12-20 inches could bring floods, with some areas getting as much as 30 inches of water from Friday into next week, the National Weather Service agency said in an advisory Thursday morning.

"On the forecast track, Harvey will approach the middle Texas coast on Friday and make landfall Friday night or early Saturday, and then stall near the middle Texas coast through the weekend," the hurricane center says.

and hasn't really been stirred with storms, so that could contribute to the rapid strengthening.

From what I have heard he ( of course) is actually experienced with that type of job.

Not much FEMA can do until after the storm, tho.

What concerned me was the high pressure to the north, preventing the storm from turning north and away from the mainland.

Stay safe folks.

Notice it hangs around the area instead of speeding north. That's bad news

We have 2 of the 6 worst dams in the country on the west side of town. The reservoirs are dry now and they have started repairs but they aren't expected to complete them until 2019. They are 70 year old dams that have a 50 year lifespan. I was here for TS Allison in '91. This could be very bad.

I can't keep up with all the quitting.

BTW, I will never, ever forgive The Quaker Oats Guy -cough- Barbara Bush for giving an interview in the Astrodome after Katrina, saying about the refugees "Well, most of these people were underprivileged anyway, so this is working out quite well for them."

I imagine she's summering in Maine right now.
