Kelly moves to control the information Trump sees

Source: Politico

A new process, laid out in two memos circulating in the West Wing this week, is supposed to ensure Kelly vets everything that hits the Resolute desk.

By ELIANA JOHNSON and NANCY COOK 08/24/2017 05:11 AM EDT

Confronted with a West Wing that treated policymaking as a free-for-all, President Donald Trump’s chief of staff, John Kelly, is instituting a system used by previous administrations to limit internal competition — and to make himself the last word on the material that crosses the president’s desk.

It’s a quiet effort to make Trump conform to White House decision-making norms he’s flouted without making him feel shackled or out of the loop. In a conference call last week, Kelly initiated a new policymaking process in which just he and one other aide — White House staff secretary Rob Porter, a little-known but highly regarded Rhodes scholar who overlapped with Jared Kushner as an undergraduate at Harvard — will review all documents that cross the Resolute desk.

The new system, laid out in two memos co-authored by Kelly and Porter and distributed to Cabinet members and White House staffers in recent days, is designed to ensure that the president won’t see any external policy documents, internal policy memos, agency reports and even news articles that haven’t been vetted. Kelly’s deputy, Kristjen Nielson, is also expected to assume an integral role.

The keystone of the new system is a “decision memo” that will — for each Trump policy — integrate the input of Cabinet agencies and policy councils and present the president with various options, as well as with the advantages and drawbacks of each one.

16. This probably irresponsibly overstates the kind of control he would be exerting.

Irresponsible because this has to be delicately and professionally done, with a proper respect for who works for whom. Because although it's very much his job to decide what internal information will make its way all the way to the president's desk, it's certainly no part of his job to decide that sources Rump wants won't be passed on. However knowing what Rump is viewing beforehand might help him.

The press and talking heads like Morning Joe helped get Bannon out. They could get Kelly tossed out the same way and write a bunch of "good" stories about it.

it won't change a thing. Twitler gets most of his info from cable news.

3. The only way for this to work

is to take away the TV and his twitter machine.

He "follows" (and even retweets) the twitter accounts for all the purveyors of the fake news & CT stories that he prefers to believe in, while ignoring any "policy documents" or other material supposedly "vetted" and digested for him to peruse.

4. Is Kelly going to put 'Parental Control' on all the TV sets also?

It's my understanding that BLOTUS has had giant, big screen TVs installed everywhere, in every room. And we know he starts every morning watching 'Morning Joe' (even though the liar denies it) and 'Fox and Friends'.
The insulting, idiotic tweets begin immediately after those shows begin.
I don't believe for a second Kelly will take away, limit or censure Donnie's TV viewing. He's like a crack addict.

Trump doesn't read anything. he gets his news from cable, and Kelly can't stop the Orange Nit Wit from watching TV or using his twitter.

He's blocking items that President* Trump doesn't read, anyway.

8. I wonder, who will be the illustrator for the "decision memos"?

The memos will need to be formatted as cute memes for 45 to retain his attention and understand them.

Will each memo have a picture of the finest, most unifying, best deal making, winningest occupier of the Oval Office ever?

12. "Do we want to fund the NEA? Can you check a box with one of your crayons?"

"You can check a box! Use a colorful crayon to check a box! Green is a good color! The National Endowment for the Arts provides funding for art, dance and theater. Do you like any of these? Then you should check the YES box if you'd like to fund the NEA. If you don't like art, theater, and dance, then check the NO box with your colorful crayon. Booo, artistic endeavors!"

Trump would probably actually like this as this is what he assumed the job would be, just signing off on stuff and having the issues presented to him for his royal tiny thumbs up or down.

first lady/wife Ivanka from daddy's office. The tRumps treat the position he has as though it is a family job, or at least a family perk. Didn't she say she looks forward to working alongside Kelly? With her extensive political experience, she will be a valuable asset (yeah, right)
