Trumps Border-Wall Pledge Complicates GOP Efforts to Avoid Government Shutdown

Source: WSJ

WASHINGTON— Donald Trump’s threat to shut down the government if Congress doesn’t approve funding for a wall along the Mexico border raised alarm among some GOP lawmakers, injecting new volatility into an already uncertain political climate this fall.

Lawmakers returning to Washington in early September have a dozen days with both the House and Senate in session before the government’s current funding expires on Oct. 1. Lawmakers from both parties had expected Congress to pass a stopgap two- or three-month spending bill, but Mr. Trump’s remarks raised fresh questions about the path forward.

he GOP president said Tuesday night that he was prepared to dig in over his request for $1.6 billion toward the border wall, one of his signature campaign promises... Mr. Trump’s push quickly hit resistance within his own party.

“I don’t think anyone’s interested in having a shutdown,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said at a stop at an Intel Corp. facility in Oregon on Wednesday... Mr. Ryan said he expected lawmakers would need to pass a short-term spending bill in September to give them more time to work out a broader budget agreement later this year.

(snip)

While some conservatives have backed Mr. Trump’s demand for a wall, it is controversial among many Republicans, some of whom think it isn’t the most effective way to tighten security. And after this year’s protracted and unsuccessful struggle to roll back and replace much of the Affordable Care Act, few Republicans are eager to shut down the government, now that they control the White House and both chambers of Congress.

(snip)

Many GOP lawmakers worry a shutdown or a failure to raise the government’s borrowing limit—another deadline they are facing this fall—could harm their chances of retaining the House majority in next year’s midterm elections. Treasury officials have said Congress must raise the government’s borrowing limit at some point near the end of September.

Well, aren't they a bright bunch?

Imagine if we spent even a fraction of that money on sane immigration policies (including seasonal workers who pick our crops for a fraction of what farmers would have to pay legal residents and US citizens--assuming they'd do that work in the first place).

PS, 40% of undocumented immigrants are not even coming from Mexico, and oh yeah, hey Trump: You said we American's wouldn't have to pay for your stupid vanity wall, you shameless lying sack of dog shit.

What a dumb ass.
He's not doing this for the U.S.: he's doing it for himself.
I hate that piece of dirt.

... is so determined to build this wall, why doesn't he pay for it himself and wait for Mexico to reimburse him?

If he doesn't have the cash-on-hand, he can always get a short-term loan from his Russian buddies, or from one of the banks he uses to launder money, while he's waiting for the cheque from Mexico to come in the mail.

10. So how exactly does a president shut down government?

All the shut downs I'm familiar with happened because Congress couldn't or wouldn't pass the necessary legislation for more funds. Is he threatening not to sign anything that Congress might pass? Or is he again blowing hot air out of multiple orifices?
