President Trumps false claim that counter-demonstrators lacked a permit
Source: Washington Post
You had a group on the other side that came charging in without a permit, and they were very, very violent. . . . You had a lot of people in that [white nationalist] group that were there to innocently protest and very legally protest, because you know I dont know if you know they had a permit. The other group didnt have a permit.
President Trump, remarks during a news conference on infrastructure, Aug. 15, 2017
In blaming both sides for the violence in Charlottesville that left one person dead, President Trump twice asserted that the people protesting white supremacists and neo-Nazis lacked a permit, unlike the groups that gathered to protest the possible removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.
But thats turned out to be false, according to documents and interviews obtained by our Washington Post colleague Justin Moyer.
The Facts
Walt Heinecke, a professor at the University of Virginia, told Moyer that he received a special events certificate of approval for events at McGuffey Park and Justice Park sites blocks from Emancipation Park, where white nationalists had a permit for a Saturday rally. A car allegedly driven by James Alex Fields Jr. rammed into counter-protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman, on Fourth Street, which runs adjacent to Justice Park.

And he didn't want to go off without all the facts.

(19,204 posts)to get his lies out into the court of public opinion before the TRUTH came out. Now the rabid right feels vindicated and accepted by regular Republicans, and the truth will never enter into their side of the story.
Republicans do this all the time. Lie, lie, lie, repeat the lie dozens of times.........and it becomes the truth. At least to the low information American Republican, who's too lazy to seek out THE TRUTH. This has worked for them for decades.

(3,888 posts)People remember the first impression they have about events. This is why the lie early strategy works. The later retraction will never have the same impact as the original lie.
Sucks doesn't it?

(52,440 posts)The nazis felt it was very important to have their proper legal ducks in order when they committed their crimes against humanity. Everything was done with proper legal authority.
The whole lesson of Nuremberg was that having a permit doesn't excuse criminal activity.
Not that the "permit" the Charlottesville nazis had entitled them to violence in the first place....

(19,569 posts)My apologies, I didn't even realize it wasn't out there already.
Fact is Trump lied about most everything that came out of his mouth that day. Who here is surprised? Yet he still framed the narrative in lies and now we are forced to play cleanup.
How do we counter this type of administration? That's what I, and the people I deal with are struggling with right now. We're in uncharted waters.

(5,815 posts)As soon as they knew that there was a permit issued for those protesting the Neo-Nazis, that should have been mentioned immediately when he claimed inaccurately that they had no permit. He makes his false claims that go unchallenged in real time. Unfortunately, what sticks in people's mind are his lies and not the correction that may come out later.
The people who hear the lies first and have a chance to respond need to up their game and be prepared to counter his lies in real time. Now, you can count on tRump to react badly, as is his habit. But at least his lies won't just sit out there without rebuttal.

(81,565 posts)Just assume it's a lie. Whatever it is. Doesn't even seem to matter anymore. Just assume, straight off the bat, that he's lying. Because that's all he does. He'll tell you anything he thinks you'll swallow - to win the point (or convince himself that he somehow has won the point).
