Source: Richmond Times-Dispatch
According the The Daily Progress, the city of Charlottesville declared a local emergency in response to the Unite the Right rally, which was set to formally begin at noon.
The Charlottesville Police Department posted this on their Facebook page:
Charlottesville City Manager Maurice Jones and Interim County Executive Doug Walker have simultaneously issued a Declaration of Local Emergency for the two jurisdictions. This joint declaration allows local officials to request additional resources if needed to respond to ongoing events in the community which are currently localized in downtown Charlottesville. Scheduled activities outside the downtown area are not impacted by ongoing events or by this declaration at this time. Local officials continue to closely monitor the situation and will provide additional details as they are available.

(11,530 posts)Reason I'm wondering is that, as I understand it, the racists had a permit to hold their hate march. They went to court to prevent the city from rescinding the permit....

Such hate, violence. I don't understand it at all. I just don't understand it.

(2,767 posts)The counter-protesters showed up prepared for a fight too, with helmets and staves. The RW media megaphone will, as always, foment the view that the left was at fault. And lo and behold, the counter-protesters (and selective editing) have given them all the evidence the biased RW media needs to exaggerate the situation in their favor and against us.
The violence is highly counter-productive, no matter how temporarily satisfying it may be to show the white supremacists that there's nothing soft about the left, no matter what the stereotypes they carry in their head. The thing is, the public's fear (including those in the middle) rises and they then support more law and order, playing right in to the Repug's hands. And it gives the authoritarian regime every excuse to militarize the response and call in the national guard.
That's the historical evidence from the summer of 1968, and it strengthened Nixon's advantage as a candidate and his response to protests after he was sworn in.

(2,767 posts)Effective protesting involves maintaining the moral high ground. But it does involve doing something, taking the confrontation forward.
Ghandi and Martin Luther King successfully channeled it.
It took courage, sacrifice, suffering, and a number died in the process. But they prevailed in the end, because they turned the majority of society and even former adversaries whose hearts and minds were in some cases changed.
Reichstag brought the full weight of the Nazis into power, when Hitler convinced the populace that militarization was justified by the violence that made them feel unsafe.
During the Vietnam War era, peaceful protests were sometimes infiltrated by those intent on discrediting the protests and the protesters. They passed out drugs and urged violence, and the left lost the next two elections. But we did not lose our basic form of government and we were able to recover.
It appears there's some of the same calculated agitation as part of the modus operandi occurring at some of the protests, but now it's happening while we have a fascist personality in the White House and a Republican party that is willing to accept very egregious actions just as long as they can hang onto power, unlike in the late '60s. We are much more at risk now than in the 1960's.
