Al Qaeda has drawn a bullseye on a new American target: Subway trains

By Rowan Scarborough - The Washington Times - Friday, August 11, 2017

Al Qaeda is about to take on a new target Americas trains in an upcoming edition of its terror magazine, Inspire.

Issue No. 17 is headlined, "Train Derail Operations," and will spell out ways to create rail disasters in a transportation system that lacks the stiff security procedures of airline travel. ... Its competing Sunni extremists group, the Islamic State, for more than a year has advocated using vehicles to mow down innocents. Its murderous followers have weaponized vehicles in Nice, Berlin and London, creating hundred of deaths and injuries.

Adding trains to the terrorists priority list would put at risk virtually every mode of transportation and placed added pressure on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

The Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) put out a report on Friday saying al Qaeda has teased the Inspire articles with a trailer appearing on Telegram app channels operated by its fans. ... The trailer highlights that derailments are simple to design using easily available materials, that such a planned attack can be hard to detect, and that the outcome can substantially damage a countrys transportation sector and the Western economy in general, MEMRI said.

I know; I know: the Washington Times. Look: they have the story. So did the NY Post, but it gave credit to the WT as the source.

We can do what we always do: wait three days for Talking Points Memo, Raw Story, HuffPost, or some other news aggregator, not news source, to rewrite the original story and slap its own name on it, failing to give credit to the original author. Then we can pretend it's LBN. Or you can read it now.

My policy is to go to the original source. That is why I'm going to the WT. They're the source.

Rowan Scarborough is a journalist. Journalists are workers. Rowan Scarborough did the work. Respect workers. Give them credit for their work.

My issue of "Inspire" hasn't shown up yet, so I can't use them as the source.

Is the story accurate or not? That's what you should worry about. If you don't click on any ads, all you're doing by going to the WT's website is running up their bill.

Meanwhile, I'm just about to leave work. I'll be taking the Red Line to Fort Totten. Then I'll head out to Hillandale on the Metrobus K9. I'll take a K9 back to Fort Totten. From there I'll take a Red Line, Green Line, or Yellow Line train to Gallery Place or thereabouts, and a Yellow Line train to Braddock Road.

I expect I'll get home as I always do, along with a few ten thousand of my closest friends.

And that Mallard Fillmore: he's such a laugh riot!

ETA, 10:45 p.m.- I took a K6 back to Fort Totten. I missed one by 90 seconds, which caused by schedule to slip by 50 minutes.

There are only a tiny handful of places in our country that aren't an easy mark for terrorists. That's why going around the globe bombing the shit out of anyone who looks at us funny is a thoroughly losing strategy in the long run.

3. Despite your explanation, WT does not belong on this site.

It's sinister right-wing propaganda. There's no real way to tell from one of their articles if what they say is true or accurate. So what exactly is the purpose of posting them here? I'd rather wait for another source.

As long as you know what it is you're looking at, it's more helpful to be aware than not, and make your own judgment accordingly.

That said, I'm not sure about "If you don't click on any ads, all you're doing by going to the WT's website is running up their bill." Not all ad revenue is based on clicks... you can also choose to pay for impressions, which are merely eyeballs. And just getting *traffic* (which is tracked, and reported by sites like alexa) increases the value of their site, their appeal to advertisers in general, and possibly what they can charge for other kinds of ads. So a visit to the site is not entirely useless to them, just by avoiding the click.

I am not an IT person, so I'm no expert.

People: do not click on the link to the WT. The four paragraphs here are enough.

Thank you.

And the concept of attacks on subway trains isn't new to begin with. USA Today has a piece from April listing terrorist attacks going back to the 90s. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2017/04/03/other-incidents-subway-rails/99978346/

Really, what's your point in posting this? Why not wait to get an unsensationalized take on the story? If it's even a story at all. Maybe Raw Story is little more than a news aggregator, but Josh Marshall site is more than that. It provides analysis & context.

Always consider the source. Plus Trump really wants his very own 9/11. Fewer Americans to collect on their Social Security, too!
