CLEVELAND -- The last time complaints came in, President Donald Trump was pushing to block citizens of Syria and other Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States -- a policy affecting physicians, medical students and their families.
The Cleveland Clinic said sorry, plans were already set. It was not going to cancel its February, 2017 ball and fundraising gala at the elegant, Trump-owned Mar-a-Lago estate and club in Palm Beach, Florida. But there was always a chance the annual winter event, held at Mar-a-Lago for eight years now, could be moved elsewhere for 2018.
That's not going to happen, at least as plans exist now. The 2018 gala will be right where it's been. Clinic officials and donors, who use the event to raise up to $1 million annually for medical equipment and care at the Cleveland Clinic Florida in Broward County, decided they still prefer Trump's club.
So a group of medical students, doctors, supporters and progressive organizations are circulating a public letter and petition repeating their earlier complaint -- and essentially calling the Clinic tone deaf. Protest rallies may follow, they say. ... Holding a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago "is unacceptable because it symbolically and financially supports a politician actively working to decrease access to health care and cut billions of dollars in research funding from the National Institutes of Health budget," says the online petition, signed by more than 1,100 people since late July.

(21,692 posts)The Cleveland Clinic, like most of the nation's hospitals, will probably shut down if Chumpcare becomes the law of the land and Medicaid as we know it ceases to function.

(5,803 posts)You nailed it.
Why would any medical entity support dump or his enterprises, in any way? Of course, other than Big Pharma and medical device makers et al. who stand to benefit from tax breaks.
Maybe because rich people care more about cavorting in gilded surroundings than actually standing up for the right thing?
Disgusting.

(21,692 posts)Cheeto's so downright inept, it looks as though Chumpcare will be defeated by his own ham-handedness.
Life almost everything else that self-important oaf has touched.

But apparently this is for medical professionals only.

(26,164 posts)It's in PBC. Move it to Broward -- betting lots of places would want to host it. Lots of country clubs, and places at NOVA.
