(CNN) - An unarmed Russian Air Force aircraft overflew the US Capitol, the Pentagon, Central Intelligence Agency and Joint Base Andrews at low altitude on Wednesday as part of a longstanding treaty that allows the militaries of the United States and Russia to observe the other from the air, according to two people familiar with the flight.

The flight was part of the Treaty on Open Skies, which allows military aircraft from the United States and Russia and other nations to fly aerial observation flights to observe military sites of the 34 signatory nations. ... The Russian Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 on Wednesday afternoon passed at around 3,700 feet over downtown Washington and Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, where Air Force One is based, according to tracking website Flightradar24.

The jet is authorized to enter P-56, the highly secure airspace surrounding the White House. ... A second flight by the same jet is planned for between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, when the Russian jet will overfly Bedminster, New Jersey, where President Donald Trump is vacationing, according to two people familiar with the US government-approved flight.

A law enforcement source told CNN that the plane also overflew Camp David, the presidential retreat in the Catoctin Mountains, the Trump National Golf Course in Virginia, and Mount Weather, one of the US government's secret relocation bunkers.

Russian surveillance plane soars over the Pentagon, Capitol and other Washington sites

By Dan Lamothe August 9 at 5:53 PM

A Russian surveillance plane soared through secure airspace over Washington on Wednesday, presumably collecting intelligence as it traveled near the Pentagon, the Capitol and other government buildings, two U.S. officials said.

The Russian Air Force Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft made the flight through the Treaty on Open Skies, which Russia, the United States and 32 other nations have signed. The treaty established criteria under which countries can make unarmed observation flights over the soil of other treaty members in an effort to promote transparency and international arms control efforts, according to the State Department.

The Capitol Police issued an alert Wednesday that warned that an “authorized low-altitude aircraft” would enter restricted airspace between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. The alert did not state who owned the plane, but said it “will be large and may fly directly over the U.S. Capitol.”
....

The flight, first reported by CNN, is expected to be followed by another one Wednesday evening that flies over President Trump’s property in Bedminster, N.J., where he is vacationing. According to the treaty guidelines, U.S. airmen are aboard the Russian jet observing when an Open Skies flight occurs.

it's a standard 'Open Skies' flight, and there are American airmen on board as observers.

We do the same types of overflights in Russia (and a lot of other places) as a part of this long-standing treaty. We (US and Russia) have agreed to 42 overflights of this type per year.

Lots of good information in the 'Military' section near the bottom of this article:

just as they did nothing on 9/11 - despite dozens of warnings, and lots of time to prepare after the World Trade towers were hit.

Chickenhawk republicans - led by their cowardly Draft-Dodger-in-Chief - are letting russia have its way. Sick republican bastards. Americans will never forgive them for their betrayal of our nation.

Someone posted a link above to information about Open Skies Treaty. I remember last year the conservative blogs and messages boards were going on and on about how "weak" President Obama was because Russia was planning some flights following the same treaty. All the data they collect is available to every participant of the treaty. So we see everything they collect and they see everything we collect in these overflights.

and our nuclear installations, our power grid, and our democratic elections, according to all 17 US Intelligence Agencies, and dick frikken cheney. So new or not, for the republican Draft-Dodger-in-Chief to give them carte blance to screw around in American skies is not OK with me.

And it was definitely not OK for me that the republicans blew off the dozens of warnings before 9/11. Then with over an hour to get ready the Bush-republican Pentagon could not even muster a Daisy Air Rifle to defend itself. They let a frikken slow ass commercical airplane smash through the walls and kill Americans.

Republicans left America wide open for telegraphed SuckerPunches on 9/11, and I and all truly patriotic Americans have reason to suspect they are again leaving us open for even more SuckerPunches. So russia can go stuff it's frikken war planes up the frikken Kremlin's keister as far as I'm concerned. That's what I'd tell them to do.

And there are 2,000 dead Americans, and their families, who agree.

You are promoting FAKE republican news to claim that Bush & the republicans did not have many and ample WARNINGS before 9/11. You can swallow the Brietbart-republican bullshit if you want, but don't try to sling it around here. The facts are on record for anyone with the honesty and integrity to research. Sayonara, Saris, I do not prolong debate with people who call established facts conspiracies. That's a republican propaganda strategy, and I have ZERO tolerance for it.

"We have not been able to corroborate some of the more sensational threat reporting, such as that from a ---- service in 1998 saying that Bin Laden wanted to hijack a U.S. aircraft to gain the release of "Blind Sheikh" Omar Abdel Rahman and other U.S.-held extremists."

Only the first line of the memo sounds interesting, all the rest is old news as this so-called "warning" foretold nothing of value. The mentioning of "possible hijackings" is a total different scheme than what later did happen. Read the memo before you promote FAKE news like this BS!

by the republicans to be very disturbing too. The short-sightedness of "well, it helped us win so let's pretend it's not a problem" is scary. I don't think these flights fall into that same category, though. They went on during the previous administration and their overall purposes are to reduce tensions.

The flights are normal, but I've never heard of them overflying private properties before, like Trumps golf courses. The inclusion of the bunker, camp David and the Air Force One hanger feels like a message to me. "We can reach you."

Maybe someone here knows more about these flights?
