Google employee James Damore, author of diversity memo, is fired

Source: BNO News

James Damore, the Google employee who wrote a controversial internal document about diversity initiatives at the internet giant, said late on Monday that he has been fired for violating the company's code of conduct. (more)

Damore told Bloomberg in an email that he had been fired, just moments after Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the employee had violated its Code of Conduct by "advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace."

In the original memo, Damore said he values diversity and inclusion and emphasized that he did not deny that sexism exists, but called for an "honest discussion" about looking at population level differences in distributions.

Damore added that the distribution of preferences and abilities of men and women differ in part due to biological causes, and that those differences may explain the lack of equal representation of women in tech and leadership.

Google Fires Employee Behind Controversial Diversity Memo

"Alphabet Inc.’s Google has fired an employee who wrote an internal memo blasting the web company’s diversity policies, creating a firestorm across Silicon Valley.

James Damore, the Google engineer who wrote the note, confirmed his dismissal in an email, saying that he had been fired for "perpetuating gender stereotypes." A Google representative didn’t immediately return a request for comment.

Google’s Chief Executive Officer Sundar Pichai sent a note to employees on Monday that said portions of the employee’s memo "violate our Code of Conduct and cross the line by advancing harmful gender stereotypes in our workplace." But he didn’t say if the company was taking action against the employee.

Damore’s 10-page memorandum accused Google of silencing conservative political opinions and argued that biological differences play a role in the shortage of women in tech and leadership positions. It circulated widely inside the company and became public over the weekend, causing a furor that amplified the pressure on Google executives to take a more definitive stand."

Faux Noise is always looking for "political correctness" martyrs.

That said, Google took the easy way out on what could have been a teachable moment.

...of the memo writer's grievances. Not to mention giving ammunition to the right wingers.

This required a measured response, not a swift reaction.

Fired Google memo writer draws scorn, cheers and a job offer

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - The male Google engineer fired for circulating a memo decrying the company's diversity hiring program became the center of a heated debate on sexism, drawing scorn, cheers and even a job offer on Tuesday from WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange.

James Damore confirmed his dismissal from Alphabet Inc's Google on Monday, after he wrote a 10-page memo that the company was hostile to conservative viewpoints shaped by a flawed left-wing ideology.

The manifesto was quickly embraced by some, particularly on the political right, branding him a brave truth-teller. Others found his views, which argued that men in general may be biologically more suited to coding jobs than women, offensive.

Assange, who is praised in some circles for exposing government secrets and castigated by others as an underminer of some nations' security, offered Damore a job.

"Censorship is for losers," Assange wrote on Twitter. "Women & men deserve respect. That includes not firing them for politely expressing ideas but rather arguing back."
