Trump renews attack on Democratic senator, calling him a Vietnam con artist on Twitter

Source: MSN/Washington Post

President Trump on Monday launched a renewed attack on Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), calling him “a phony Vietnam con artist” on Twitter after the senator appeared on television.

Trump’s series of tweets came after Blumenthal voiced support on CNN for continuing the investigation into alleged Russian meddling in last year's election and expressed concern about the Department of Justice’s increased focus on rooting out administration officials who leak information damaging to Trump.

“Politicizing the Department of Justice for personal ends, I think, is a disservice to the law, and it’s also potentially a violation of the spirit of the First Amendment,” Blumenthal said, suggesting the department was “weaponizing” laws against leaking sensitive information.

“Never in U.S.history has anyone lied or defrauded voters like Senator Richard Blumenthal,” Trump wrote on Twitter shortly afterward. “He told stories about his Vietnam battles and … conquests, how brave he was, and it was all a lie. He cried like a baby and begged for forgiveness like a child.”

Of course, Trump, who has attacked the parents of members of the military who died in the service of their country, seems to forget his lack of service. Or, perhaps he still thinks that avoiding STDs was his own "personal Vietnam."

Donald Trump’s Draft Deferments: Four for College, One for Bad Feet

Back in 1968, at the age of 22, Donald J. Trump seemed the picture of health.

He stood 6 feet 2 inches with an athletic build; had played football, tennis and squash; and was taking up golf. His medical history was unblemished, aside from a routine appendectomy when he was 10.

But after he graduated from college in the spring of 1968, making him eligible to be drafted and sent to Vietnam, he received a diagnosis that would change his path: bone spurs in his heels.

The diagnosis resulted in a coveted 1-Y medical deferment that fall, exempting him from military service as the United States was undertaking huge troop deployments to Southeast Asia, inducting about 300,000 men into the military that year. The deferment was one of five Mr. Trump received during Vietnam. The others were for education.

Which is far more than trump ever did. He got some criticism during his last Senate run for making remarks that seemed to suggest that he had been in Vietnam, but generally his comments were more along the lines of "during the Vietnam war." That's as far as it went. He never "told stories about his Vietnam battles and conquests" or even said he was in any battles, as Trump alleges, and Blumenthal did apologize for the inaccurate characterizations of his service.

He never intended to say that he returned from Vietnam, he was speaking about meeting soldiers who had returned from Vietnam.

Other comments he made were ambiguous and one could infer from them that Blumenthal had served in country. Still, Trump is overblowing what Blumenthal said bigly.

same speech I am thinking about, even that was a big nothing burger. Earlier in the speech he talked about his service during VN. Later in the speech he said in VN. That was the sentence that hit the news, not the others. He also never claimed in his bio that he served in VN.

Such as at a rally in Bridgeport in 2003 where he said "when we returned, we saw nothing like this. " when comparing the support troops got then in 2003 to the Vietnam vets.

It is pretty much a nothing burger and Trump is blowing this all out of proportion but Blumenthal did bring some unneeded grief upon himself by not being clear in regards to his military service.

The rumors were similar to what you say, but there was also corrupt, "on the take" draft board stories. Rich, spoiled rich kids like Trump were simply relieved of their military commitment through buying off the right doctors and draft board members by a rich mommy and daddy.

He was ok, did his job, and (like most of us in my company) was drafted.

Disclaimer: this was Vietnam ERA, not in Vietnam.
