Graham: GOP 'should be politically horsewhipped' if we give up on healthcare

Source: The Hill

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on Monday said the GOP “should be politically horsewhipped” if the party does not take another stab at passing healthcare legislation.

“I am like one-thousand percent with Donald Trump on this,” Graham told Fox News. “We should be politically horsewhipped if we don’t try again.”

Graham has been pushing an amendment he authored with Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) that would direct much of the federal funding for ObamaCare into block grants for states.

“The government closest to the people is the best government,” Graham said. “The healthcare closest to the people is the best healthcare.”
“It will make healthcare more accessible to you. If you don’t like what’s going on, you complain to your governor or your statehouse guy rather than a bureaucrat in Washington,” he added.

what is the difference between bureaucrat in state house and bureaucrat in washington? The republicans don't even take their time to study the issues but operate purey on untested ideas

Nothing but a revision of the original Senate bill that only got 43 votes and it's not even a good revision of it. Block granting medicaid is a non starter.

So now he has to distance himself, in a loud and obvious way.

Uncharacteristically aligning with Trump will ensure loads of News Coverage, highlighting his new "support" for repeal.

He still did a good thing by not going with the skinny repeal.

But of course he's a Repub, so he will be working with the Repubs trying to get something passed (if he's well enough to return), and will try to get some Democrats on board. He referred to Graham's ideas as good, so he concurs.

I don't know what to think of it yet. Not sure what "block granting" is and what effect it will have.

Block grants end the federal mandate that prohibits the states from attaching the assets of children or relatives if a parent or loved one goes into a nursing home on Medicaid. In fact Medicaid coverage for nursing home care would probably end.

The reason I know about this mandate is that before Medicaid if a parent went into a nursing home and the state paid for it the sate could assess the children and force them to pay for the care. It was based on income and the child would e expected to pay whatever the state determined was appropriate. In such a situation the relatives are liable. The worst case scenario is that the state could file liens and take the property and or income of the children to pay for the care. Medicaid and the federal mandate sequestered the childrens' assets. Only the property and income of the parent and spouse could be effected.

My mother's sisters had t pay for my grandmother's care. My mother was out of state so they could not assess her at the time. They had to pay so much every month just like a bill.

to keep up with each one. When I make my phone calls to congress it's helpful to know a little about what I'm complaining about (sarcasm). Of course the staffers don't know either. I heard that they wrote the Skinny Bill over lunch (8 whole pages) before giving it to the Senate to vote on with two whole hours to read and comprehend first.

I trust that their top priority with these block grants would be to help the poorest in their states. Look at how many of them refused Medicaid expansion...ugh.
