Los Angeles makes deal to host 2028 Summer Olympics

Source: LA Times

Los Angeles has reached an agreement with Olympic leaders on terms that will pave the way for hosting the Summer Games in 2028 instead of 2024, according to a source close to the negotiation.

The deal will bring the Olympics back to Southern California for a third time, after Los Angeles hosted the Games in 1984 and 1932. It also opens the door for Paris to host the Games seven years from now.

An International Olympic Committee announcement is expected later today.

This bid competition began as a simple race for 2024, but all that changed in June when the IOC decided that, with two strong candidates, it would take the unusual step of giving 2024 to one city and 2028 to the other.

I seriously doubt the two weeks of tourism dollars would be worth the cost to build the facilities and the traffic during the event. I mean, look at current pics of the facilities in Sochi. Billions spent, and the facilities are abandoned, crumbling. That's not what I'd want for my city.
It's not treasonous to root against being chosen, if you are going to have to pay for the aftermath.

Every former Olympic venue in LA is used for something as far as I know and are all very active. Now if you are talking about LAX then that's a different story but that's not because of the Olympics it's because LAX is the pit of despair.

Some of the 1988 Olympic sites in Calgary are so well used you could mistake day to day training for an international competition.

This is something North America does incredibly well.

You need a place for the opening and closing ceremonies...but also for the various events, and there are plenty of universities in the LA Basin that have those facilities. The only thing I could think of is...well, maybe a velodrome. Turns out there are several velodromes in operation down there, including the one they built for the 1984 Olympics.

Basin there are so many venues, facilities and we'll just shut down the streets if we have to also.
As long as we get to host the games while trump is not president.

I am very happy for the athletes.

Us folks in Southern California will just clear out of town like we did in 1984!

I'm sure Paris didn't want to budge and the IOC is not a Trump fan I'm sure so this makes sense. Paris doesn't care if they make any money on the Olympics and will spend lavishly to make it great. As someone else said LA is one of the very few cities that can actually make money on the games. Even without two new NFL stadiums and a reconditioned Colosseum we still have enough existing venues that could do it all.

I am hoping it is Governor Jay Inslee of Washington.

But if we host the Winter Olympics in 2038 then we may be at the beginning of a horrible Republican administration, one that launches an assault on Democracy which makes Trump and his actions pale by comparison.
