Trump, LePage actions threaten Maines national monument
Source: Bangor Daily News
Maines national monument will be attacked on two fronts if, as anticipated, President Donald Trump orders a review of monument designations later this week, and Gov. Paul LePage testifies before Congress on May 1 against executive orders that create monuments without state approval.
LePage will fly to Washington, D.C. to testify before a House Committee on Natural Resources subcommittee next week in opposition to national monument designations created by presidential order, the governor confirmed Monday during a press conference in Augusta.
The Legislature in Maine said [it] didnt want a national park or monument and he [President Barack Obama] went ahead and did it anyway, LePage said Monday. Im going to say he violated the Antiquities Act and it should be reversed.
The committees spokeswoman, Molly Block, said she could not confirm the hearing or LePages attendance, but might be able to later this week.

And in states where no good pricks like this run things, same thing.

That's the goal with a Gorsuch Court.

(1,242 posts)signed ....... " The Antiquities Act of 1906 doesnt give the president power to undo a designation, and no president has ever taken such a step. But Trump isnt like other presidents. "
"Newly sworn-in Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has said hell fight the sale or transfer of public lands. But he also believes states should be able to weigh in. The National Parks Conservation Association has vowed to sue if Trump, the Interior Department or Congress tries to remove the special designations.
Wherever the attack comes from, were ready to fight, and we know the public is ready to fight if someone comes after our national parks and monuments, National Parks Conversation Association spokeswoman Kristen Brengel said.
In Maine, the prospect of undoing the designation is further complicated by deed stipulations requiring the National Park Service to control the land and a $40 million endowment to support the monument, said Lucas St. Clair, son of Burts Bees co-founder Roxanne Quimby, who acquired the land.
Three of the four members of Maines congressional delegation want the monument to stand to avoid reopening a divisive debate in towns surrounding the property. One of those three is Republican Sen. Susan Collins. "
