Zimmerman spent $36K in 18 days on phones, Internet, credit cards and bills

By Frances Robles
frobles@MiamiHerald.com

George Zimmerman went through almost $36,000 of contributions in 18 days spent mostly in jail, spending a bulk of his newfound cash on telecommunications, newly filed court records show.

Using funds donated from the public on the short-lived www.therealgeorgezimmerman.com, Zimmerman and his wife spent $6,500 on Internet and phone bills, according to a document his defense attorney filed with the judge. He and his wife bought new cell phones for $300 each and paid a year-long Verizon contract in full. They installed a telephone landline for $2,500 and spent $1,300 on a two-year AT&T wi-fi contract.

They paid off at least $7,000 in credit card bills.

They used $4,378 on automotive expenses, making payments on two car loans while renting another for more than $1,500. Gas: $800.

Was it made of gold and included a hotline to the Kremlin?

This guy is having a nice holiday, isn't he?

Bank records submitted as evidence indicate Zimmerman spent at least part of that time on the Maryland shore.

and I pay sixty some odd bucks a month--and I think I'm being ripped off, but I like having a landline!

If I need to call Europe or Middle East or Asia, I use a phone card.

Is he also getting cable and internet with that? Even at that, I can get one of those "Triple Play" deals with all the bells and whistles for under a hundred and fifty bucks a month.

I know with my service which is AT&T (sadly no other options in my area for internet other than satellite which is cost prohibitive) for both dsl and phone I pay around the 160 area and thats the bundled price.

towns because from what I read the uverse rollout has been either slowed or stopped.
On the bright side where I am the county is rolling a digital fiber line all over now and its due for completion sometime next summer so hopefully I will have other faster and cheaper options for internet, tv and phone service.

There may be a chance that they are just trying hide how they actually spent the money. Other than that, maybe it is a typo and the landline only costs $250. That price does seem more reasonable.

wow, thats possible more than I have spend on bills, internet and phone since I was able to move out on my own many, many years ago.. And all that in 18 days?.. I guess he want to be sure to jump the ship when able..

To use 2500 on a land line Phone line - is just silly as it not even in Norway cost 2500 dollar to get a land line out of the house... I guess most of this bills they put forward is dummy, where the real money are going to hiding, to be used when he and his wife are running out of the country.. From Florida you can leave for more or less every latin.-american country - and it exist a few, who still doesn't have any deals with the US regarding people fleeing justise...

Not if he wanted a number he could call to reach his wife at if she didn't go on the run with him.

Edited to add: Not to mention this was "free" money they were spending. It's actually more likely that they got a bunch of money all at once and spent it on a bunch of random stuff.

is it okay to use money you convinced people that you need for your legal defense fund on your own personal bills, buying new cell phones and paying off credit card debt and your vehicles, it would seem like you misrepresented what you needed money for, and defrauded those who donated
