Jail call says defense attorney knew about Zimmerman’s hidden money

Prosecutors released nearly 150 of George Zimmerman’s recorded jailhouse phone calls Monday, including one that suggests his defense attorney knew from the start that tens of thousands of dollars in donations had begun pouring in.

In a phone call recorded April 14 between Zimmerman and a friend named Scott, the two discuss the new defense lawyer and the attorney’s vision for an upcoming bond hearing. Zimmerman tells his friend that he told his new attorney, Mark O’Mara, that he tried to transfer $37,000 from his online legal defense fund site, but could not complete the transaction because of PayPal rules that prevent transfers larger than $10,000.

He twice mentions telling O’Mara about the money.

“He said he’s going to have me declared indigent,” Zimmerman told his friend. “I told him I didn’t think that would be possible, because there was one sizable transfer I tried to make. It got stopped. You know, $37. He said: ‘Well that doesn’t matter. Right now you’re not working. You’re not providing an income for your family. You’re probably not going to be employable for the rest of your life.’”

The witness said in the interview that she had contacted police after the shooting because she was afraid Zimmerman "may have done something because the kid was black".


She said Zimmerman and his family, who come from a mix of Hispanic and white backgrounds, "always made statements that they don't like black people if they don't act like white people. They like black people, if they act white".

They like black people if they act white and other than that, they talk a lot of bad things about black people.”

The woman said that Zimmerman’s Peruvian mother was among the more boastfully racist of the clan.

“His mother protested it very loud,” the woman said. During one incident, the woman said that Zimmerman’s mother had come to the witness’s workplace, and during a discussion about President Obama, made it clear how she felt about him and his ethnicity.

“I don’t like Obama,” the woman claimed Zimmerman’s mother stated. “She said, 'because he is black and I am a racist.'”

3. I had wondered how O'Mara had not known

It was all over the media that GZ was soliciting donations through a personal website, it seemed inconceivable that at least one of O'Mara's staff didn't know about it and report it to the boss.

4. O'Mara seems to like taking risks with the truth, and doesn't care about misleading Judges.

That could be dangerous to his client's interests. Not sure that's the reputation he wants to walk away from this trial with.

5. My prediction--O'Mara drops him as a client within a week, citing potential conflict of interest.

If your client is saying one thing about your knowledge to third parties, and you are representing another to the court and/or public, a smart lawyer knows this will not end well for themselves, and will drop it like it's hot.

I'm sure that GZ's mother is quite dark, given his complexion. I'll bet she's brimming with self-hatred, thus the ignorant boasting about being a racist.

That idiot judge never should have let GZ out of his cell until the trial. The whole process is going to turn into more of a circus now.

Sigh.... Florida law enforcement. The gift that keeps on giving.
