Two killed, 19 injured in Toronto shooting

Source: Reuters

(Reuters) - Two people were killed and at least 19 injured in a shooting at an outdoor party in Toronto, police said on Tuesday, raising fresh fears of a rise in gun crime in Canada's largest city.

Police said it was too early to say what prompted the shooting late on Monday in which a young man and young woman were killed. Many of those hurt were injured in the panic that ensued after shots were fired.

"This is the most serious crime of its kind to ever take place in the city of Toronto," Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair told reporters at the scene.

Coming barely six weeks after a shooting at a shopping mall that killed one and wounded six, it is likely to raise fears about the use of guns in a city which takes pride in its relatively low crime rate compared with U.S. urban centers.

I have a feeling you're in good company.

And thanks for asking. I keep meaning to reply to Steve's thread. That certainly came as a surprise. I probably have bronchitis, but I'm feeling better than I did this weekend.

I also saw "Bowling for Columbine" more than once, so I know that Canada doesn't experience the gun violence we have here, despite a much higher rate of gun ownership. I think that's the reason this is such big news. It's the worst that they've experienced.

Good to see you, my friend! I hope that all is well with you (both).

Things on that scale still happen now and then, but they're rare enough that multiple shootings pretty much always make national headlines. I know I'm stunned by it.

What are Canada's gun laws?

Was alcohol involved?

Were gangs involved?

If you enjoy carnage then maybe you are part of the problem.

How much financial help does the NRA offer victims as opposed to the accused when people get shot?Wouldn't want to disturb anyones 2nd amendment lust ,or question the 100% advocacy in virtually every story or post .I probably should avoid that group ,as I do have an inclination to shit on GUN NUTS , and I've never got involved in a discussion about Guns ,unless it was in the Main General Discussion Forum ,which my dumb-ass took as an invite to comment ,check out my next comment on the subject.

you start with an insult then go on to derail the conversation by "just asking questions" that are silly and have nothing to do with the topic at hand.

How much money does the ACLU give to victims of hate crimes? None. That's not their job.

One of them might be an increase in the gang subculture, where young people, who have beefs or conflicts with one another because of the subculture they’re ingrained in, just don’t – pardon the language – give a fuck. I’m actually paraphrasing a lot of the men that I’ve interviewed that are involved in gangs. They’ll just say, “Nobody messes with me. And if you are going to insult me, or fight me or push me in a public area, I’m going to come back and use extreme violence, because nobody does that to me.”

Some people are wondering, why isn’t this happening in back alleys? Sometimes it’s because the people don’t care if they get caught. Other times, they’re actually trying to enhance their reputation. If you have an audience that has seen you use extreme violence with little regard for others, does that enhance your reputation as somebody not to be messed with?

Since our purchase laws are so lax and so many US guns end up in the hands of Mexican drug cartels, that is.

Detroit passed 300 homicides in 2010 to all of Canada's 554. That sort of situation in a major city close to the border tends to give it a reputation.

Of course, that doesn't change what I said about Mayor Ford. He's been rapidly upgrading himself from "classless municipal embarrassment" to "classless national embarrassment" over the course of the last year - it's the chief thing he's actually good at.
