Romney Says GOP's 'Not Party of the Rich' But of 'Those Who Want to Be Rich'

Source: ABC OTUS News

JACKSON, Miss. - At a fundraiser at a country club in Mississippi this evening that was expected to raise a record-breaking $1.7 million, Mitt Romney defended the Republican Party against its reputation as the "party of the rich" explaining that really, it is a party focused on helping the poor.

"We're accused, by the way - in our party - of being the party of the rich," Romney said. "And it's an awful moniker, because that's just not true. We're the party of people who want to get rich. And we're also the party of people who want to care to help people from getting poor. We want to help the poor.

"We also want to make sure people don't have to become poor," Romney said. "And we know what it takes to keep people from becoming poor."

This was Romney's second fundraiser of the day, his first in Louisiana raising at least $2 million, bringing the campaign's tally for the day to $3.7 million.

OK, it ain't 11-dimensional chess, but the Romney campaign has obviously glommed on to that John Steinbeck quote about the poor regarding themselves as temporarily embarrassed millionaires. From their point of view, pandering to that sentiment is probably the only way they can secure more than 1% of the vote. However, Romney has revealed himself to be an out-of-touch elitist so often in the past that I fear* it is a case of too little, too, late.

34. I call it the "Amway mentality"
Tue Jul 17, 2012, 10:28 AM
Jul 2012

A number of years ago, an individual who I met through a friend invited me to an Amway convention. He talked up how great it is to own your own business, how through Amway I would be able to sell "my products" over the internet and through "distribution channels" that I set up on my own. Mildly intrigued, I went to the convention with him. There were thousands of people, all dressed in suits and "Sunday best" dresses. At the convention, the top dog got up to deliver his presentation. Mixed in with numerous tasteless religious and right-wing political sentiments, the top dog exhorted his army to "use their own products" -- basically, buy and consume Amway products. And he spent a good 20 minutes haranguing the audience that there was no way to achieve the wealth and success that he himself had achieved unless they buy and constantly listen to these cassette tapes which feature the top dog himself exhorting the audience members to -- buy and consume Amway products. I left that convention convinced that I had just witnessed a major, epic scam going on. Here were all the rich-man/woman wannabes, thousands of them, and the top dog pounding out the message that if they wanted to get rich too, then all they have to do is buy products FROM the top dog and listen to him for several hours daily explaining how to get rich. How to get rich? Buy his tapes which explain how to get rich, and buying his products, internalize the message, repeat constantly.

The Republicans have a herd mentality. They must somehow believe that there is a chance that they will get rich someday, if only they follow the Great Leader and do what he tells them to do. Just buy the Great Leader's products, listen to the Great Leader's speeches daily until you got them all memorized, never question his authority and yes, you too can one day be rich, just like him.

It is an epic scam.

Jul 2012

So.......think about it in this context: At least half of American "citizens" are the spoiled rotten, over indulged little woosies, you know....crybabies & serial complainers... that have grown (up?) into self absorbed, fat, lazy wannabe's. The right wing/repuke/corporate model was, is & will be based upon this one clear & indisputable FACT: corporate knows salesmanship, & half of America WANTS to be sold, Wants to be told how to think, act, speak & live. This is only a variation of the "Great Daddy in the Sky" meme, with the flock (their word) following with blind faith. How hard is it to sit back and let the "leaders", (pols., priests & pundits), do all the thinking? This is the "Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous" crowd, the "wannabe's" who, in the great American tradition, choose fantasy over truth, why?, because the Truth takes guts & a little effort. The Truth demands an ACTIVE citizenry, w/ open minds, moral fiber, reason, fairness, clarity, backbone & a bit of SACRIFICE for the greater good. These individuals ARE the flock, & ARE being lead, willingly, straight over the cliff, into the abyss, not because they don't know any better, but because they've sat back & have unquestionably "bought into" the hype, propaganda, programming from the last 35+ years. America....a not so great work of fiction/fantasy, brought to you by the very corporate institution(s) that We The People, (The REAL JOB CREATORS), have supported, & who have now, with a sizable number of the "citizenry", turned on their OWN. Back biting Bitches & Bastards, who when the going gets tough... bitch, moan, complain, show their true colors & shout their rallying cry: Hooray for "US"....& FUCK everyone else! And now that their own tactics are being used against their "candidate", they cry even louder, and I LOVE IT! Play fair?...tough shit! Lay off the tax returns & the Truth?...tough shit!, remember "purple heart band-aids", "Muslim terrorist born in Kenya", the first family being denigrated by...pick one! I could go on & on & on...all on here KNOW what I'm saying. Now...pass it on, never let up, never quit, & never surrender! OF, BY & FOR THE PEOPLE, so help Us........ US!!!

This is the most disingenuous statement I've seen yet. So much so it's laughable. Yes..that's why the disparity between the 1 and the 99% is so freaking large. Because they make sure the 1% will never be broke by sending tax cuts..very large ones..up the hill. People who want to get rich? I think most police and firemen along with teachers already know they won't be rich. You see it's their desire to serve not to strip the economy for their own capital greed. But that last one..

"And we know what it takes to keep people from becoming poor." Poor is anyone making under 5 million.

Of course they do..hire lobbyists and funnel corporate money to congressional crooks..outsource outsource outsource..and don't pay taxes by obtaining offshore bank accounts. Defund the middle class so they can't afford to contribute to the political process. They're so naive they'll believe anything. We can even turn them against each other.

How many people, thanks to his work at Bain, lost pensions that might have kept them out of poverty in retirement? How many people, thanks to his work at Bain, lost health insurance, only to suffer financially devastating illness that led them to poverty? How many people, thanks to his work at Bain, lost jobs and fell into poverty because of that loss?

Yes, he knows what it takes to keep people from becoming poor. And he spent a career making sure those things didn't fall into their hands.

PALOOKAVILLE: With the backing of more money than it cost to put a man on the moon, the Romney campaign has already begun putting people back to work. Clowns don't even need exploding cigars to keep throngs of people laughing while reading Mitt Romney's speeches, while mimes cavort nearby, boxing themselves in.

"It's another comic Golden Age," said one mime who looked suspiciously like Stephen Colbert, off the record, "we haven't had it this easy since anyone named Bush." Gag gift and prop booth operator "Jon" tells The Pratfall that he's been sold out of fake vomit and fake dog poop since early June.

Bill Maher, in the meantime, had to be physically removed from HBO Studios after refusing to go on vacation as planned. "There is low-hanging fruit draped across the backs of the fish in that barrel," Maher shouted as his security detail spirited him away to Belize. "Come the f^$ on! It's the only thing I actually hunt!"

Nearby, writers sip mohitos in lawnchairs, brainstorming for the script of the already greenlighted "Dude, Where's My Car II: On The Romney Campaign Trail." Some of the producers still insist it should be a documentary.

Not everyone is optimistic. "It's too good to be true," says Carrot Top. "Most voters don't know how hard comedy really is. We can't rely on them to make the obvious choice, so I hope the Republicans try to steal it."

If Republicans had to rely on only the rich to vote for them, they wouldn't even get a few percent of the vote. They absolutely rely on suckering people into thinking they can be rich by voting for Republicans. Tue Jul 17, 2012, 04:55 PM
Jul 2012

After years of seeing their jobs outsourced, downsized, or otherwise, seeing their pension plans raided by the CEO, they should be giving up any illusion of reaching the rarified upper income levels they aspire to. I think part of the rage felt by the Tea Party types (who are mostly middle-aged to elderly) is the creeping realization that, they've been lied to, they've been screwed, blued and tattooed. Their retirement home may be a cardboard box in an alley.

Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and various cheap imitations thereof, have learned to harness that rage and direct it. "It's all the fault of them libruls, them soshulusts that you're not rich!"

Young people, by and large, have lost their illusions. They know their job prospects are shitty, and their college loans may outlast their careers (If they find a decent job to begin with!). That's why the younger generations are turning Democratic and why words like 'socialism' isn't a red flag for them like for their elders. And, of course, that's why GOP governors across the country are working to disqualify those young people, especially students, with voter ID laws.

It's impossible for everyone to be materially wealthy. You would have soaring rates of inflation and rapid depletion of natural resources in order to do it.

What most sane people want is economic security. They want to get to a point in their lives where lack of money is not their primary concern.

What is real wealth is the ability to spend the majority of your time as you want, not working endlessly to chase the next dollar.

I consider the ability to work only 10 months a year and have 2 months doing what I want to do as being wealthy.

You can be rich too! Just send me some money and I will tell you how.

No refunds, all sales are final. Results may vary. Many will enter, few will win. Send in $19.95 if you want me to be president, $39.95 if you don't.

blah blah blah...

that might resonate during boom times, but people these days have scaled down their aspirations, they just want security, they want steady work.
