Anti-Semitic Tweets Erupt After Rabbis Prayer At Trumps Inauguration
Source: Huffington Post
The rabbi who blessed Donald Trump at his presidential inauguration Friday said he expected the anti-Semitic messages that were hurled his way on Twitter ― and that they wont stop him from doing what he thinks is right.
The Times of Israel reports that hundreds of hateful messages targeting Rabbi Marvin Hier appeared on the social media site following his remarks at Trumps inauguration. Hier was invited by Trump to offer a prayer Friday along with five other religious leaders.
On Twitter, some users expressed surprise and disgust that Hier was speaking. One person depicted him as the devil, Hier mentioned with amusement Monday.

Theres been a rise in anti-Semitic activity since the election, according to Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, a nonprofit that fights bigotry and attacks against Jewish people.

Anyone surprised by this hasn't been paying attention.

(3,145 posts)Trump is known as the hero of the white nationalist, virulently anti-semitic alt-right and yet this shmegegge still got up there and called upon God to bless this monster.
A rabbi blessing a fascist. What a strange world.

(58,724 posts)The rabbi is not the point. The point is the content of the tweets. Which are anti-semitic.
If someone posted racist tweets and imagery with respect to the African-American who also gave a benediction, would you similarly respond by saying you don't feel any sympathy for the fella or would you call out the disgust nature of the racism?
Jake Stern
(3,145 posts)I could and do call out their racism but I also have every damn right to say that it boggles the mind why the pastor (or rabbi) would even consider associating himself with such a vile person.

(26,871 posts)This was a PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION. This is one of the most important ceremonies of our country. It is meant to be a demonstration of WHO WE ARE and what we stand for. To have people of multiple faiths (it would be nice to have someone of no faith also contribute) give their blessing from their traditions is IMPORTANT. I think the Rabbi was incredibly brave for standing up and reminding everyone that Jews are part of the fabric of this nation as well.
I absolutely despise Trump and everything he stands for, but if I had been invited to do a prayer or blessing at the inauguration, you bet I would have been there. If given the opportunity to throw spiritual mojo at Dear Orange Leader in public I'd most certainly take it.
To compare that to an African American pastor going to a KKK meeting, which is a private organization, with mostly secretive meetings, and which very basis is hatred would NOT be the same thing at all.

Right now, I'd say he's starting with "zero" amounts of both those qualities.
I certainly would not call for his current agenda and plans to be blessed. No way.

(26,060 posts)you think the rabbi DESERVES these vile tweets for daring to offer him a prayer. Is that really what you want to be saying?

(37,748 posts)I imagine he (like many people), was thinking, "I reject your premise. You lack objective evidence to support your allegation, appear to lack context and historical nuance, and seem a tad hysterical and overly-emotional as well."
He may also be thinking, "It's so incredibly horrible that a poster on the internet does not feel too bad for me. I'm broken by it..."

(3,051 posts)1. Several of Trump's kids are Jewish. Ivanka is Orthodox (and actually got a special waiver from her Rabbi to attend events on Shabbos).
2. Most of his grand kids are Jewish.
3. He's an ass, not an antisemite. The two are similar. And they often overlap. But I see nothing to indicate Trump suffers from that particular handicap.
4. I have no objection for a Rabbi (or anyone) to pray for Trump. I happen to believe prayer works, and it may, just may, change Trump's heart and mind for the better. It certainly won't hurt.

(53,831 posts)Then again, I don't expect much from him or those who actually make excuses for it because the rabbi chose to speak, therefore, well...you know how it goes.
This is just a reminder for those who think anti-Semitism isn't real, isn't there, or a fabrication of the Jewish mind. You know of what I speak.

(53,831 posts)Few understand the true nature of the white nationalist movement in this country, especially the newer version. They understand the groups they attack, but the "why" always seems lost on many. Of course, there are those who breathlessly wait for things like this story to launch their favorite excuse. Any guess as to what that excuse is?

(4,642 posts)since I put them all in the Science fiction category but this kind of reminds me of the head scratching that goes on when a Jewish Lawyer defends known Nazis or someone that goes against everything they stand for. I would see that as a sign of strength, not someone who is selling out.

The ignorance alone is deplorable enough. The hatred is deplorable cubed.
