Deadly suicide bombing in Afghanistan

Member of parliament among the 20 killed in an attack on his daughter's wedding in the northern Samangan province.


At least 20 people, including a member of parliament, have been killed and some 40 others injured in a suicide attack in northern Afghanistan.

The bomber is understood to have targeted a wedding party for MP Ahmad Khan's daughter in Samangan Province.

The head of intelligence for the province, Mohammed Khan, was also killed in early Saturday and among the injured are senators and MPs.

This attack comes a day after a regional head of women's affairs was targeted and killed by a car bomb in Afghanistan's east.

Hanifa Safi was killed while driving through the capital of Laghman province, Mehtar Lam, when a bomb attached to her car exploded, provincial governor spokesman Sarhadi Zwak said.

....Khan was known for his anti-Taliban stance — fighting against the group’s rule in the late 90s. The Taliban has denied any involvement in his assassination, but the Guardian notes suicide bombings are not usually criminal in nature — rather they are carried out by insurgent groups.

“[T]he Taliban has repeatedly said it considers politicians and other government officials legitimate targets. [But] they might also be reluctant to claim a brutal attack on a wedding party, because it violates instructions from the group's leadership to avoid civilian casualties.”
