A US Navy destroyer has fired warning shots at an Iranian Guard vessel in the Strait of Hormuz.

Source: SBS

A US Navy destroyer fired three warning shots at four of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps vessels on Sunday after they closed in at a high rate of speed in the Strait of Hormuz, two US defence officials told Reuters on Monday.

The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the USS Mahan established radio communication with the boats but they did not respond to requests to slow down.

The Navy destroyer fired warning flares and a US Navy helicopter also dropped a smoke float.

This has happened in the past but I believe the timing of this is in direct relation to the coming transition to Trump. I'm not saying that as positive or negative. Just that positions are being re-established. I am of the belief that Trump is going to be more of an isolationist militarily than most think. I think some of our adversaries are thinking the same thing.

i have a trumpkin in my life. i do not think he has a racist bone in his body, but he is an angry white guy who would like to blame his lot in life on someone else.
his #1 thing is that he thinks he will get us OUT of wars. i hope he is right. i doubt it, but i can see him wondering if he is not really smart enough for a war. not out loud or anything. but a wee small voice in his head telling him that he might not win.

Trump threw out a lot of militaristic bluster while campaigning that played well with certain groups. He more often than not didn't talk like an isolationist militarily. That said, nothing he did was for the sake of staking out true policy positions. It was just campaigning. The art of the deal if you will.

I am under the belief he will turn a blind eye to Russian land expansion, Iranian interference in the middle east, along with numerous other world issues. While I haven't been big on how we work with many world issues, and stepping back on certain things would be good, I feel what we are going to see that Trumps form of isolationism isn't what most want. I think numerous countries are currently setting the stage for Trump. These countries know that the way to Trumps heart is to make Trump look good.

Example: Russia has increased their bluster and over the last month or two their relationship with the WH has gotten even worse. In comes Trump, the bluster disappears, it then appears to be a victory for Trump all while he simply turns a blind eye to their expansion. It would really be a win for Putin and Trump on a political level while Trump is actually doing little to nothing. Trump is a scam artist. First and foremost is image.

I know a lot of people think Trump is going to be an aggressive President militarily. I believe just the opposite.

There have been a few incidents of them running up at Navy ships and getting no response. This is a change from that. Now the Iranians know they cant push it too far or they'll end up at the bottom.
Just my view of course

Well, the Iranian leaders are bat shit crazy and downright evil. Those that are not crazy are oligarchs that make Putin and Trump look like pikers. They also have a giant ego that makes them very thin skinned (like the Orange Won).

The cabal in charge are part of the nutty "twelever" offshoot cult of Islam (think Westboro Baptists X 100 in charge of a country).

Their goal is to actually bring about Armageddon and bring their Iman out of the well (really, go Google it), so they poke the bear.

I am not sure what can be done except either containing them and hoping for an eventual revolution of sane people or going ahead and poking them back.

And, finally, as I often reminded my late wife -- don't try to think like crazy people. Or try to figure out their motives. They are not rational and trying to think like them will make you crazy.

Isn't Iran, then, sending their sailors out on a potential suicide mission to engage a lethal response? You have Dominionists, as in Pentecostal Pence (Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin are also 'Rapture ready') and the Iran Armageddon cabal welcoming 'End Times'. shudder

The poke the bear and we do nothing, we look weak and it encourages others to do the same (e.g., the captured sailors).

We blow them up, and they have martyrs.

It's just an ugly situation with no great answers, except to be vague in our response (strong, but avoid martyrs).

And that just buys time. Eventually, we are going to have the fight they want.

It's a reminded what a shithole this world is.

to be skeptical of military pronouncements.

The lying liars who got us into Vietnam and kept us there for decades
richly deserve a healthy dose of skepticism.

Ever hear of the Tonkin Gulf?

Ever heard of D-Day? Both being just as irrelevant to the here and now... and both being used simply to simply frame our narratives in a manner that strokes our biases in a more friendly form.

Either illustrate for us objective evidence that the current report in question is inaccurate at best, dishonest at worst; or simply continue with the unsupported allegations which say little and mean even less.
