McConnell: Democrats need to grow up and let Trump nominees get confirmed

Source: Washington Post

Republicans are vowing to press ahead with confirmation hearings this week for Donald Trump’s Cabinet nominees despite the concerns of a federal watchdog that their complex backgrounds are slowing required ethics reviews.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Sunday that there are no plans to alter a packed confirmation calendar, but he vowed that no nominee will earn an up-or-down vote until the requisite background checks are completed by the FBI and a federal ethics office.

“The Democrats are really frustrated that they lost the election,” he told CBS’s “Face the Nation,” adding that he was in a similar situation eight years ago when President Obama took office.

“What did we do? We confirmed seven Cabinet appointments the day President Obama was sworn in. We didn’t like most of them, either. But he won the election,” McConnell said. “So all of these little procedural complaints are related to their frustration at having not only lost the White House, but having lost the Senate. I understand that. But we need to, sort of, grow up here and get past that.”

There's a statute that requires these ethical background checks to be done. What's the point of having hearings now if the ethics reviews turn up all manner of unsavory conflicts of interest (which, in the case of some of these dickbags, is entirely possible)? Won't it be embarrassing for the GOP to have to withdraw a nominee who turns out to have a festering heap of sleazy conflicts of interest problems? It's pretty obvious they want to limit public scrutiny of their corrupt stooges.

Listen, Mitchy, you hypocritical piece of turtle shit. You took almost a fucking year to NOT do your job to hold one fricking confirmation hearing, now you want to do SEVEN in one day? Fuck off, the people DID speak and 3 million more say that you got it wrong. It takes as long as it takes. Get your sorry ass nominees to fill out their damn applications, in full, give us a couple months to see what the hell they have left out and lied about, then we will have us some investigations, special hearings, spend millions of dollars dragging our heels and then we will get back to you in, oh about, 4 and half years to tell you to fuck off.

Obviously, they are going to paint any effort at finding clarity in the nominees qualifications for office as being obstructionist to making 'merica great again for billionaires!

Sun Jan 8, 2017, 06:39 PM
Jan 2017

All right, it would be fun too. But I still won't.

Mitch McConnell was the leader of the obstructionist wing of the Republican Party during the presidency of Barack Obama. Obama, by and large, chose reasonable people to fill his administration - and McConnell's gang attempted to quash them all.

Fast forward to now. Trump picked...

a Secretary of State with so many foreign entanglements - including ones with countries hostile to us, like Russia - that anything he does is going to run him into conflicts of interest
an Energy Secretary who ran for president on a pledge to get rid of the Department he's been chosen to lead
a Labor Secretary who hates workers and is trying to get rid of the ones he has
an Education Secretary who despises public education
a Defense Secretary who wants to be the next Gunnery Sergeant Hartmann
an EPA Secretary who's aligned with the fossil fuel industry
an Interior Secretary who almost got kicked out of the Navy for travel fraud
a SBA chief with no knowledge of small business, except maybe the vendors who sell snacks and souvenirs at her wrestling matches
a Transportation Secretary who is married to Mitch McConnell (and, as far as I know, is totally innocent of any knowledge of the commercial transport industry)
an Attorney General whose only problem with the Ku Klux Klan revolves around the refreshments they serve at their meetings
a Housing and Urban Development secretary who hates public housing assistance
a Treasury Secretary who helped create the Great Recession
a Chief Strategist who runs breitbart.com

Shall I go on? I'd really like Trump to explain why he chose these people for the positions he did - especially Ben Carson, who says he doesn't want to work in government in the first place (which explains why he ran for president) and for whom there are two MUCH better positions - head of the FDA and Surgeon General. Did he choose all these people specifically because he knew they'd piss off the Democrats? If so, he needs to withdraw them all and replace them with people who might actually have some skill set running the agency in question.

I looked at her bio on Wikipedia, and it appears she knows banking pretty well - but all she knows about transportation is being the agency head.

I guess it's too much to ask for another Deborah Hersman (the NTSB administrator with a commercial driver's license, who grew up investigating train derailments) but you'd think we'd get someone in any of these agencies who want to do something more with them than padlock the door.
