Carlson: Roger Ailes’ Verbal Harassment Was ‘Continuous’
Source: Talking Points Memo
I just wanted to stand up for myself, first and foremost, Carlson told The New York Times in a Tuesday interview at her lawyer Nancy Erika Smiths New Jersey home. And I wanted to stand up for other women who maybe faced similar circumstances.
The former Real Story host stood by the allegations laid out in the lawsuit, claiming that Ailes made sexual advances towards her, oversaw a culture of sexual harassment at Fox News and fired her because she refused him and complained about her treatment at the network.
She told the Times that she kept quiet about the continuous offensive language she heard from Ailes because of the hierarchical structure of the network.
Everyone knew how powerful Roger Ailes was, she said. I certainly felt intimidated by that.

Ailes = Cosby
By which we can infer that there are lots more men out there still doing this, using their power and access and position to commit repeated assaults on women. As a father, as a friend, I worry about this continually.

(135,425 posts)She was 'let go' from Fox right around the time Carlson was hired....and she apparently had committed the crime of getting a bit older and thicker, as folks often do in conjunction with aging.
Be interesting to ask Rita if she ever took shit from Ailes.

(13,071 posts)Most women put up with it and smile. I did for years when my boss would tell me he liked the size of my breasts and suggested the type of tops I should wear. That was not in the too distant past.

(130,028 posts)I first thought it was referencing "Tucker Carlson" throwing Ailes under the bus. But then realized the story was about Gretchen.
I hope this whole issue gets some legs though because enough is enough. There are alot of what we used to call "dirty old men" still out there.

She was on the wrong side - and I wonder if she still is.

(29,503 posts)It's funny how that works - many people who build careers doing questionable things are often the same people who LATER criticize OTHERS for performing those same dubious deeds. It's so common as to be a cliché.
While the issue bringing her name to the forefront of people's minds today isn't HER behavior, my point (and your point, I think) is she spent years putting a candy-coated glaze on conservative and even misogynistic ideas. Yet, now that it's about her, she wants to be treated fairly.
She SHOULD be treated fairly, but in light of her history, she is not a woman about whom I want to spend much energy talking about or thinking about - she's a big girl, as they say, and can take care of herself. Just as Sarah Palin did.

(260 posts)and I tend to believe that it certainly is, but the flip-side is that she is making these allegations now because her contract wasn't renewed and she's pissed.
I kinda wish she had left and made this public when she was fully employed as a way of protesting the way she was being treated rather than waiting and appearing to be a disgruntled employee.
Time will tell if the allegations end up being true or not - especially if more women come forward with claims of abuse at the hands of Ailes and other executives at Fox.

(47,209 posts)So easy. I could have sued bosses- but this shit is so hard to prove and you'd never get hired again.
StraightRazor
(260 posts)when she made the allegations she had no career, her contract wasn't renewed. That's the point I was trying to make, that it would have been much more impactful (and believable) if she did in fact 'ruin her career' to make it known that Ailes abused her.
Now, she just sounds like a disgruntled employee.

(47,209 posts)Works. Some times that's a difficult thing to do- especially when you know how pervasive the problem is in your industry. Very difficult to prove - more so against a powerful man. I would have gotten out of my industry altogether at a firstly young age if I had sued. It's easy for outsiders to say sue, the reality is much harder.
