Elizabeth Warren Is Invited to Speak on Democratic Convention’s First Night

Source: New York Times

In an apparent sign that Senator Elizabeth Warren will not be named Hillary Clinton’s running mate, Ms. Warren was invited by Mrs. Clinton’s campaign on Tuesday to deliver a prime-time address on the first night of the Democratic convention this month — a marquee speaking slot but one that is earlier than vice-presidential picks typically appear.

Such nominees usually speak later in the convention week to build anticipation for the top of the ticket.

Two Democrats briefed on the invitation to Mrs. Warren, however, cautioned that Mrs. Clinton had not yet made a decision about a running mate and that asking Ms. Warren to take the stage on the first night did not preclude her from being tapped as the vice-presidential nominee.

Ms. Warren and other individuals who received invitations on Tuesday to address the Philadelphia convention were told that their speaking times were subject to change depending on who was selected for vice president, according to the two Democrats, one with ties to Mrs. Clinton and the other to Ms. Warren, who both spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss convention planning.

Also, it is possible that she didn't want the job.

If we take back the Senate she will chair of the subcommittees of the Senate Banking committee.

To those disappointed that she will not be VP (apparently), compared to being a United States Senator isn't being VP rather ceremonial?

It has nothing to do with the op or the poster you left your comment to.

Care to explain?

and I meant that Bill would be Hillary's closest, very strong, advisor. That could reduce Warren's influence with more left policies. I had always wondered with all the talk of Warren as VP if she really wanted it - and why she would.

I think the role of VP might be diminished in a Clinton WH - perhaps not to ceremonial status, but not like a Biden. We shall see.

She's my senator and I love her.
And as amazing as a Clinton-Warren ticket might be,
I think she can do much more good as 'not vp'.
Either way we're very fortunate to have her on our side.

Maybe they will have President Obama speak on Tuesday night instead.

We really do. I don't care if Harry Reid has finessed it so that there wouldn't be any interim appointment but an immediate special election were her seat be vacant.

The VP position is largely ceremonial. He or she does not set policy, cannot influence legislation, can't make much of a difference helping out in the off year elections.

So for all of you who'd been dreaming of a Clinton/Warren ticket, rest assured that keeping Senator Warren in her current office is far and away better.

Some other person will make a fine VP.

family, maybe they could ask EW to speak at their convention, too. A speech by her would bring them more positive publicity than anything they are likely to come up with.
