Trump tweet attacking Clinton employs image of Jewish star

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Saturday tweeted an image of rival Hillary Clinton alongside hundred-dollar bills and a Jewish star bearing the words "most corrupt candidate ever!", prompting outrage and bafflement on social media.
Two hours after his initial tweet, Trump tweeted a similar image in which the six-pointed Star of David - which appears on Israel's flag and which Jews were forced to wear on their clothing by the Nazis during the Holocaust - was replaced by a circle. The original tweet was deleted.
Critics said the image featuring the star harkened back to centuries-old anti-Semitic stereotypes, such as the belief that Jews are greedy.
"Just saw #DonaldTrump's Star of David tweet. I'm impressed by his ability to find a way to insult literally every kind of human being," screenwriter Cole Haddon wrote on Twitter.

(62,562 posts)It continues to amaze me that Trump thinks this kind of thing is actually going to hurt Clinton and help him.
What is also amazing is that apparently Republicans are willing to continue to follow this clown.

(62,562 posts)a post below links to an image that has "America First" on the twitter. IIRC "America First" is a throwback to Nazi sympathizers during WWII. Think it was Lindberg's group. That makes that twitter pretty plain even for the dense like me.
Edit to add: It does appear Trump did pick up a few things reading Hitler's book.

This is more than a dog whistle. This was a clear, overt appeal to people who admire Nazis and hate Jewish people. Ignore this at our peril.

(1,178 posts)in the U.S. are Latinos and African Americans. Trump already has the white antisemitic vote locked down, but the larger antisemitic vote is solidly in the Democratic camp.

elljay
(1,178 posts)It is the result of studies. Why are you resistant to the fact that there are perhaps more antisemitic Democrats than Republicans? And, perhaps you don't realize that your comment itself is antisemitic? Jews and Israel are two different things. I am not Israeli and I said nothing about Israel. Do you automatically discuss the politics of Venezuela whenever an American Latino posts something? How about China's policies towards Tibet when a Chinese American says something? So American Jews get different treatment, do they? As if you understand the complexity of opinions about Israel within the American Jewish community. Point being that Trump pushing antisemitic memes doesn't get him any more support from Republicans than he already has. Most of the antisemites these days are Democrats.
TomCADem
(17,391 posts)I guess we can collect your "studies" along with studies cited by Donald Trump to broadly characterize people by race and ethnicity. I can understand if you were commenting on ideology, i.e., Christians tend to believe in Jesus, etc. But to disparage people by race and ethnicity? But, like Donald Trump, if you cite a study, you believe it is okay.
http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2015/07/01/donald_trump_to_cnns_don_lemon_on_illegal_immigrants_somebody_is_doing_the_raping.html
"Somebody is doing the raping, Don, I mean, you know," Trump said. "Somebody's doing it."
"Who is doing the raping?" Trump asked.
DONALD TRUMP, GOP PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Well, if you look at the statistics of people, I didn't say Mexicans -- I said the illegal immigrants. If you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything, coming in illegally into this country, they're mind-boggling. If you go to Fusion, you will see a story about 80% of the women coming in, you have to take a look at these stories. And you know who owns Fusion? Univision. It was in The Huffington Post. I said, let me get some of these articles because I've heard some horrible things. I do a lot of talking with people on the border patrol. They're incredible people. They help our country.
DON LEMON: But I want some clarification --
TRUMP: No, but Don, all you have to do is go to Fusion and pick up the stories on rape and it is unbelievable when you look at what is going on. So all I am doing is telling the truth.
elljay
(1,178 posts)for saying racist things and I am here fore a racist for calling out bigots? Fine, believe what you want but you lost credibility on the subject when you decided that responding about US policy on Israel has anything to do with prejudice against Jews.
TomCADem
(17,391 posts)Trump makes broad generalizations about people based on race, e.g. "The Mexican Government is forcing their most unwanted people into the United States. They are, in many cases, criminals, drug dealers, rapists, etc." .
You are making broad generalizations about people based on race, e.g. "Interestingly, the two groups with the highest percentage of antisemites in the U.S. are Latinos and African Americans." .
Trump argues that he is not racist because his claims are based on statistics and studies, "If you look at the statistics, of people coming ... I didn't say about Mexico, I say the illegal immigrants if you look at the statistics on rape, on crime, on everything, coming in illegally to the country, they're mind-boggling," he told Lemon."
You are argue that you are not racist because your claims are based on statistics and studies, "Not a stereotype. It is the result of studies."
As you argued, Trump is an obvious racist, and I would add a dumb ass for not recognizing that his effort to hide his racism behind statistics and studies are not persuasive. Don''t you agree that Trump is dumb ass for not recognizing that his comments are racist and thinking that hiding behind so-called studies does not make him any less racist?

(30,884 posts)I suggest you find less right wing, libertarian sources for your information. As for the cited statistics, they come from ADL's polling alone. Other, less partisan polling may not support their numbers (without access to a full report including methodology it's hard to say whether the ADL poll is a valid marker.)
elljay
(1,178 posts)but have read the underlying ADL report. Too hard to jump around on my touchy iPhone to find another reference- my thumbs are hurting. Plus, I have read more than enough antisemitic screeds on progressive sites to know that the bigotry on the left is easily as great as that on the right. I have heard Louis Farrakhan interviewed on progressive African American radio as a community leader, when the comments he makes about Jews are incredibly hateful. I can't see progressive shows interviewing David Duke with the same respect. I want it recognized that antisemitism is quite common in the progressive wing and it should NOT be tolerated, as we shouldn't tolerate ANY bigotry.
TomCADem
(17,391 posts)I guess now we know where Trump was going when he was questioning whether Hillary was Christian a few weeks ago. Trump is going anti-semitic with the dog whistle allegations that she is actually jewish.
http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/284281-trump-questions-clintons-religion
Donald Trump questioned Hillary Clintons commitment to her Christian faith on Tuesday, saying that little is known about her spiritual life even though shes been in the public eye for decades.
Speaking to a group of top social conservative evangelical Christian leaders at a gathering in New York City, Trump said, we don't know anything about Hillary in terms of religion.
Now, she's been in the public eye for years and years, and yet there's no there's nothing out there, Trump said. There's like nothing out there. It's going to be an extension of Obama but it's going to be worse, because with Obama you had your guard up. With Hillary you don't, and it's going to be worse.
The meeting was closed to the press but E.W. Webb, a faith leader on hand for the event, posted video of the remarks.

(43,855 posts)I think he's testing some sort of theory that if you say contradictory
things long enough, be on both sides of everything in essence, everyone
hears something they agree with and the rest are so confused that you
can lead them to vote for you with xenophobic/racist/misogynist blather.
A mind control technique that weakens resolve through confusion, in other words.
A cult of personality, credibility, triumph straight from the great propagandists
This all adds up to numbers, the number of people who will vote for you.
We live in dangerous times
yardwork
(61,930 posts)There's nothing contradictory in his message. It's clear.
The idea that Trump is some kind of mad genius is wrong, imo. He's purely and simply a fascist, racist, homophobic, misogynistic bigot.
bucolic_frolic
(43,855 posts)were adept at the very same things that Trump is doing. Being on both
sides of everything. Geo I was for it on Monday, and against it on Thursday night.
This went on for years. He was the self-announced "environmental President" who
then refused to sign environmental accords at a summit in South America. He stayed
above the fray while Willie Horton ads did the dirty work. "Read my lips, no new taxes"
was pure spoon-feeding the public.
GWB was even known for subliminal manipulation. He had some gaffe where he
couldn't pronounce 'subliminal' correctly. He clung close to Gore on the issues.
And "During the 2000 U.S. presidential campaign, a television ad advertising for Republican candidate George W. Bush showed words (and parts thereof) scaling from the foreground to the background on a television screen. When the word BUREAUCRATS flashed on the screen, one frame showed only the last part, RATS.[2][3] The FCC looked into the matter,[4] but no penalties were ever assessed in the case" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instances_of_subliminal_messages
So I do think the GOP uses subliminal persuasion and Trump is part of that school
of public relations. It's straight from the corporate world, which is where he has lived
his life. Couldn't be clearer, in my mind anyway.

(7,658 posts)It has been reported that the Trump campaign has a lot of problems with staffing. Apparently competent political operatives do not want to work for him. A couple of days ago some more just resigned as well. maybe he had to scrape the bottom of the barrel and his pr people are that tone deaf and inept. Either that or he subcontracted to one of the white supremacist group that supports him.

HRC's PR, advisors, and consultants are aware of it and taking
it seriously, and know what to do about it.

(54,148 posts)There will be those who will decide in no way could Trump be anti-Semitic because he has a Jewish daughter. Does that also mean he isn't really anti-immigration given his marriage history?! Is Trump just brain-dead to basic anti-Semitic imagery? This is very possible as it is quite frequent among many types of people. When anti-Semitism is the topic, everyone gets a "say", except of course for some of us Jews.
